@katelangbroek and @nofiltermamamia spoke with me about my experience with gambling harm & why I am advocating for loss limits across Australia.

Australia loses more money gambling than any other nation in the world.

I’m very grateful to have been able to chat with the amazing Daniel Bullen who started @addictedrecovery podcast and talk about gambling harm and the way it impacts our communities www.facebook.com/share/17TvKv...

This is an intentionally predatory environment that rewards a few by facilitating the financial destruction of so many. 😔

Albanese is crying poor, but we’re losing billions a year from untaxed gas In Norway, they tax their oil and gas industry heavily and give their kids free higher education. Here, we do the opposite.

More than HALF of 🇦🇺’s gas exports are given away with no royalty, no PRRT, no meaningful company tax

Norway taxes oil & gas heavily so has a $2.8 trillion sovereign wealth fund.
We have $1 trillion of debt.

We need urgent PRRT reform to stop the great gas giveaway

Any which way you slice it, there is NO justification for allowing this predatory industry to keep financially exploiting our communities, it is a Government endorsed wealth transfer into the pockets of a few, enough is enough.

Good comment; good article in Guardian. Anything less than implementation of Murphy committee recommendations on advertising will be clear concession by government that gambling industry lobbying matters more than public health and wellbeing.

The question I’m asked most when I give keynotes and corporate presentations on gambling harm is ‘But how come government hasn’t stopped this from happening?’
It sickens me to have to tell them our public servants are not serving the public, they are protecting this predatory industries profits.

Whether it’s Liberal or Labor, the people in charge are beholden to the pokies industry The first time Kate Seselja used a poker machine she won $1000. It was the last time she left a venue with cash in her hand from the addictive machines.

Thank you @peterfitz1.bsky.social for shining a light on NSW’s pokies scourge and thank you @kateseselja.bsky.social
for bravely sharing your story once again. Political inaction on pokies harm is a barometer for the level of state capture by the gambling industry. www.smh.com.au/politics/nsw...

Tabcorp ‘clearly emboldened’ by government inaction on gambling ads, David Pocock says Betting giant plans to renovate gaming rooms and increase use of promotions to attract more gamblers to pubs and venues

The Albanese Govt’s failure to act almost 2 yrs after the Murphy review’s 31 reccs were released means companies like Tabcorp are emboldened & exploiting regulatory loopholes on things that cause huge harm like gambling inducements, hurting more 🇦🇺s

The impact of influences selling out to gambling companies has exposed a whole new cohort of people, especially women to gambling harm that were never even looking for it to begin with. It is the Wild West and we are failed by governments to be protected from this predatory industry.

This is such an important moment of accountability for this predatory industry

How Drake Became Gambling's Biggest Scammer
How Drake Became Gambling's Biggest Scammer YouTube video by ODAAT Gambling Awareness

It is sickening to think about how many young people are now addicted to gambling, influenced by Drake to gamble like it’s nothing, while he and stake.com make out like bandits.

AFL admits it has lost control of online gambling oversight amid spike in ‘integrity risks’ Exclusive: Leaked documents reveal the AFL struggles to detect if players are using inside information to manipulate betting markets, despite close ties to industry

The AFL lost its integrity when it went to bed with the gambling industry. ‘Unprecedented integrity risks’ means the AFL don’t like it when they lose the gambling advantage or edge, they are only interested in a system that exploits their customers and keeps their own revenue soaring.

When it comes to gambling sponsors and sport, one state tops the scorecard Almost two-thirds of all major sporting teams in one Australian state are receiving money from gambling companies, an ABC analysis has found.

Terrific story from Jess Stewart at the ABC about gambling advertising and sport with a particular focus on Queensland.

Thanks for including me. As always great comments from @davidpocock.bsky.social and @kateseselja.bsky.social

When I asked for help, I received messages that only men struggled with gambling. It made me feel so alone. It was one of the reasons I went public with my story a decade ago. I knew if it happened to me, it was happening to other women. Enough is enough. Gambling reform NOW!

The Teals and @davidpocock.bsky.social have been outstanding on gambling reform.

Good to also see Senator Pocock propose an inquiry into any influence the betting industry has had over government policy. #CDOH

The Govt has decided to do nothing on gambling ads and it seems industry may have had a hand in this outcome.

Today I’ll ask the Senate to agree to an inquiry into this, so we can see how much influence industry has over this public health policy.

I cannot fathom the motivation of the Greens to support this.

Every presentation I give I am asked - “why is the government not doing anything?” I have no answer. There is no logical ethical or socially responsible reason for this failure act.

We have been politically abandoned for greed.

It is in reading the quotes from the CEO that the core business and total disregard for consumer safety is found - it is addiction by design and Australians need to rise up to stop this insane financial exploitation of our communities.

Since we are the Nation most harmed by Gambling in the 🌏 and our Government is doing nothing to stop this, I will keep working to equip people with new knowledge and understanding of this issue to combat the current status quo. This impact is felt via, suicides, family violence, homelessness, family breakdown, mental health issues, crime and incarceration.
No one is there with lived experience advocating for the financial viability of families and individuals impacted by gambling harm.😔

NO BUSINESS SHOULD RUN AT THE COST OF FINANCIALLY DESTROYING OTHERS!
It is legalised theft and addiction by design and THIS industry continues unharmed while every day that passes, the human cost of $32Billion dollars being swindled out of our communities is being horrifically felt.

Levy’s don’t stop gambling harm, it’s just a cost of doing business. I’m so sick of hearing about the financial viability of businesses being put before the wellbeing of Australians with a critical public health approach.
