🎇 Patch dynamics seem to mirror directly informed dispersal decisions unravelled at the individual level in colonial species. So best not to ignore dispersal mechanisms nor neighbouring patches when investigating population dynamics!
✅ We found patch dynamics depend on the size and/or breeding success of neighbouring colonies. Spatial scales at which colonies influence each other and local/neighbour interactions cannot be explained by neutral demographic processes, rather indicating social information use in dispersal decisions.
Ever wondered how informed dispersal can manifest itself at the population level? 👀 Here are some hints from a spatially structured population of black-headed gulls: doi.org/10.1002/ecy....

Another step towards linking animal migration and population dynamics using integrated modelling! The secret lies in a neat equation relating survival and transition probabilities between migratory regions
