yeah good shout, a guy in lochgoilhead made these for me (it was the fitter who fucked up the mitre, not the carpenter) (also pictured: an original)

basically in the case of architraves, i'd say it comes down to whether you want to avoid having to do any replastering when removing them inevitably brings parts of the wall down too, vs how much graft you're willing to put in scraping and scraping and scraping with them remaining in situ

a local supplier of shellacs etc didn't seem to care that my business account name had "software" in it, so let me buy this "trade only" product. it made scraping the varnish goo off MUCH easier but ultimately i did still end up getting them taken away and dipped

oh also, I might have advice for getting your hands on dichloromethane (hopefully not literally) but probably only useful if you've still got lots more to do. i used it later for the architraves in my hall, it was much better than anything consumer but honestly idk if it was really worth the risk

I'm pretty sure a professional would manage to do a much better job without any fancy tricks to be honest - likely a skill issue, but "taking the moulding off and doing it as a separate piece" is what immediately occurs to me as an amateur's workaround

knowing there is a better way might just be what gives me motivation to do the same thing in my spare bedroom - by the time I got to that, my attitude was "fuck it, another layer of gloss it is". godspeed - from now on you'll recognise the smell of "scraped pine" and be reminded of the graft

woof panelling with inset moulding, all painted white. you can tell the panelling was not quite a perfect flat surface and paint has unevenly pooled and failed to coat the cracks between the panels and the moulding

tbh, considering *this* is the end result that I'm saying was well worth the effort, you can tell we gave up at a certain point. one thing I always wish I'd done was painted the moulding and the panelling separately then mounted it last - but someone better at painting might not need to!

modern paint cracking on a similar surface where no hard prep work was done

pictured: much worst results in the kitchen where we just thought "fuck it" and tried to use primer to encapsulate the old gloss paint and bring it back to a matte finish - clearly, it looks like shit.

nah just a crap steel one. I am pretty sure it was back to wood at the end cos i just decided I wouldn't mind being a bit stupider and took a heat gun and eventually belt sander to it 😬 the effort was well worth it tho even considering it got painted, much nicer finish

disappointing results from the same endeavour

been there, ended up painting it white. Think the only way to get a good result at this is to get it removed and taken away to get soaked in a vat of paint thinner. good opportunity to insulate a draughty bit of the house too. but also - expensive and disruptive, personally I can't be fucked

after days of grifters and con men at CES we stumbled upon the booth for VLC. they were all dressed as wizards and told us, "we have nothing to sell, we just decided to show up". i told them I'd been using their software to pirate media for 15 years and they said "keep doing that"
