Right now we’re kicking off the project #MARVEL 🌊
Building in integrated regional network of high ecological value marine areas in the Levantine-Balearic demarcation, combining science, data and collaboration to support better conservation.

By combining ingestion + movement, we estimate:
• ~21 kg of plastic transported (Barcelona)
• ~0.5 kg (Ivars) over 60 days
Gulls act as biovectors, revealing how human waste moves across connected landscapes
Patterns reflected habitat use and human activity:
• Urban gulls → industrial & urban habitats
• Inland gulls → agricultural & aquatic habitats
Strong differences in plastic exposure and diversity:
• 100% of pellets with plastic in Barcelona
• 56% in Ivars
Plastic types, colours, and shapes differed accordingly.
We combined:
• Pellet analysis (plastic ingestion) 🟤
• FTIR (polymer identification) 🔬
• GPS tracking (27 birds) 📍
