Because Relooted is a hilariously obvious example, that lecturing your audience and/or telling "the message" does not equal a qualitatively good or fun gaming experience, nor drive money in. They produced for activists, yet hoped for money from gamers, who wanted a fun game, not a lecture.

How about making games for gamers instead? But they would have to put fun and gameplay before "their message". And that seems impossible.
