Deep-sea mining starves life in the ocean’s twilight zone Scientists have discovered that deep-sea mining plumes can strip vital nutrition from the ocean’s twilight zone, replacing natural food with nutrient-poor sediment. The resulting “junk food” effect…

Historical illustration from 1754 depicting four stylized marine creatures: a colorful crab with symmetrical pincers and eight legs at the top left; a long, narrow fish with blue and yellow stripes and two prominent, curved antenna-like fins at the left center; a small, pinkish fish with blue spots and green fins at the bottom left; and a large, rectangular fish on the right with a scaly body in muted greens and blues, accented by bright stripes and circular markings near the head and tail. The artwork is detailed with ornate, vibrant colors and accompanies French text labels identifying each species. No cow-related imagery is depicted.

Sorry. I was less saying it to purely be macabre and more pointing out that divers have a weird polarization in response to wreck sites. They can be utterly respectful to the memories and wishes of remaining family (as in the Fitz) or appallingly blase (as in the Kamloops).

Except the Kamloops, where divers routinely encounter an unidentified victim known as "Old Whitey" due to the body's white appearance caused by a thick layer of adipocere. I hate that I know this, and now, you do, too! 😜

I've been a bit crazy busy the last month or so. So let's get back into it with questioning how/why Gen Z got so into the Edmund Fitzgerald. I have no problem with it. Fitz was a mighty ship, the story is tragic, and the song has mad feels. But why? #edmundfitzgerald

I love being able to hang out with rare and threatened species at Heron Island like this Whitespotted Guitarfish. There are a few that hang around the channel at any one time, and they typically just rest on the sand.

Despite their appearances, this is not a shark but a ray!

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again:

The real villain in Jaws isn’t the shark, it’s a capitalistic mayor that values profit over people!

Illustration from "Paléontologie française," depicting twelve detailed black-and-white figures of Cretaceous-era fossil corals. The corals vary in shape and texture, featuring radial symmetry with numerous small pores and ridges. Some fossils are circular with radiating lines (figures 6, 7, 10), while others are elongated or conical with patterned openings (figures 1-3, 11, 12). The image includes labels numbering each specimen and scientific names of four coral genera at the bottom, highlighting their paleontological classification and structural diversity during the Cretaceous period.

A neighbourly sort of coral 🪸💕

A resident of rocky environments, the mushroom soft coral (Heteropolypus ritteri) offers a haven for small animals seeking protection. A snailfish may hide near the umbrellas of stinging tentacles, or a shrimp might hang on to weather the storm of strong currents.

Illustration of four different Caribbean sea sponges from an 1864 natural history plate. The sponges vary in shape and texture: one is elongated with rough, reddish-brown spiny edges; two others are tall with tubular, pale beige forms featuring small holes and black spots; the last is a pinkish, irregularly shaped cross-section with a porous surface. The artwork showcases scientific detail with faded labels and subtle shading to highlight textures and structural differences among the sponges.

Historical illustration from "Gemeinnüzzige Naturgeschichte des Thierreichs" (1780-1789) showing a beluga whale partially submerged in water. The beluga is depicted with a streamlined, pale body and a rounded forehead. It swims near rocky shores with some sparse vegetation visible on the rocks. The water is illustrated with flowing lines to indicate movement. Below the whale, the text reads "Physeter Albicans Briss. Le Cachalot blanc, Der Weisfish," referencing the beluga's scientific and common names in different languages. The style is detailed yet softly colored, characteristic of 18th-century natural history prints.

This little piggy went to the deep sea 🐽😍

Sea pigs (Scotoplanes sp.) are one of the most commonly sighted animals on the seafloor off Monterey Bay—but plentiful hardly means boring. Unlike most sea cucumbers, sea pigs use their long, stilt-like tube feet to suspend their bodies above the soft mud.
