My new (and first) book, The Drunkard in Victorian Fiction and Culture is out in May with @edinburghup.bsky.social. You can now pre-order which is pretty cool. Even cooler is that you can get 30% off with this flyer/code. Recommend to your university library if you think it will be of interest. 🍷

BBC Sounds - The Shadow of the Cutteslowe Walls - Available Episodes Listen to the latest episodes of The Shadow of the Cutteslowe Walls on BBC Sounds.

Fascinating programme on the cutteslowe walls that divided the cutteslowe estate from a 'wealthier' housing estate including roads and pavement with spikes on top from 1934-59. Amazing! I lived in that area for years after I moved to Oxford and had no idea....

Thanks for being interested in attending - that is lovely in itself. Glad to hear that it was very important business (B&B are essential to a good life) and nothing too boring that prevented you from coming along. I'll ask Janine about a recording. Hope it makes a good seasoning for your lunch...

Yes! I sometimes dream about mackerel & pickle sandwiches under the bridge in Istanbul; Malaysian curries and vietnamese hot pots. I also mourn closed restaurants - there was a place in Bristol that did amazing crispy noodles (hard to find good ones in the UK) which closed 5 years ago - still missed

🧵I think a major misunderstanding about science is that people think it's about "facts". It isn't. Scientists might have thought that once, and many still do. But the core of scientific methodology is to find predictive MODELS. And famously, "all models are wrong, but some are useful". 1/N
