On the Hasan Minaj "emotional truth" topic in The New Yorker. I'm with him on this. He's telling stories based on his life and stories need shaping. Real life doesn't often come in 3 acts with a clear Inciting Incident and Refusal of the Call etc. You tell the emotional truth first, facts second.

I read a feature drama from a new writer. He had two characters that had to learn a life lesson about violence, but the finale had them both revert to type. I explained that he's just negated the last 90m and maybe he should look at how they can change.

In today's life as a screenwriter I researched all of the horrific ways deep sea divers can die. It took most of the day, and was truly horrifying, but I found time to pull them all together into a feature story.
