Thrilled to have been able to review 'The Paradox of the Organism: Adaptation and Internal Conflict', a volume edited by @arvidagren.bsky.social & Manus Patten.

"...the reality that complex organisms function at all feels like pure magic, with the powers of molecular evolution behind the curtain."

Huge congrats to my student Elle, who won an award for Outstanding Presentation at UAA's student showcase today for her poster "Accuracy, Bias, and Confidence in Two LLM Models When Queried on the Topic of Evolution"! So excited for her to get some well-earned recognition!

The Evolution conference w/ @asn-amnat.bsky.social @sse-evolution.bsky.social @systbiol.bsky.social is in Cleveland this June. It's an excellent conference center, in a town with many good restaurants.
But wait, you'll say... weren't we just there a few years back?
Here's why...

Whistleblower says Trump officials thought USAID did 'just abortions,' asked for 'Barney-style' slides before gutting agency, per new book Read an exclusive excerpt from Nicholas Enrich's "Into the Wood Chipper"

NEW—I got an exclusive excerpt from a USAID whistleblower's new book that made me gasp multiple times. It details Trump's dismantling of the humanitarian aid agency & his team/DOGE's shocking ignorance to public health.

'Into the Wood Chipper' by Nicholas Enrich is out tomorrow. Read excerpt here:

Disappointed, though not surprised, I began to describe various life- saving components of USAID’s global health portfolio, highlighting how we prepare for and respond to emerging pandemic threats; support the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV; and immunize millions of children from the deadliest childhood diseases. I spoke for about five minutes, focusing primarily on our infectious diseases work and hoping to keep the attention of people who seemed to have no experience—or interest—in global health.

When I finished, the room was silent, the political appointees looking at one another in what appeared to be disbelief. The silence was broken by Ken Jackson, who chuckled softly and shook his head. “Wow, there really is so much that USAID does that we never knew,” he said. “This is the story that needs to get out there.”

Joel, also smiling, chimed in next, echoing Jackson’s amazement. “I had no idea you did all this,” he said. “As a Republican, when I think of what USAID does in global health, I assumed it was just, you know, abortions.”

NOT WITH MY TAX DOLLARS.

It’s not just that this is a memorial Trump is building to honor himself. It’s the size & the location.

Twice the size of the Lincoln Memorial, and towering over Arlington National Cemetery, where two presidents and thousands who died in service to this country are buried.

A three-decade long study of chimpanzees has revealed a primate version of a bloody civil war. It's now at risk of getting eliminated due to cuts at the National Science Foundation. My story here (gift link): nyti.ms/4mhr5NQ

A star scientist showed that better genetics lessons could reduce racism. It was the death knell for his career Brian Donovan had persuaded high school teachers and education researchers that prejudice might be ended by changing how genetics is taught.

“We’ve lost out on the ability to continue to improve this work to make it more effective, and to explore how to apply it to other areas…There are a lot of different ways that genetics has been used to justify prejudice and…that human-made social categories interface with biological categories“🧪
