Happy DC Emancipation Day!

Today, we honor the anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the District and the liberation of more than 3,000 enslaved people.

We also reflect on the ongoing work to build a DC where freedom is fully realized—through equity, opportunity, and dignity for all.

Also, I’d be curious to know the actual number of kids that come in from Maryland and Virginia but list a home in the District as their residence.

Ossoff: "Iran's ballistic missiles and drones are not destroyed. The regime is intact, along with its ability to throttle the global energy supply. Along with its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which it only assembled after Donald Trump shredded President Obama's Iran deal."

Don’t know where that proximity is to have the biggest impact? Then use EPA’s Smart Location Calculator that provides a breakdown of location efficiency of a development project!

Bonus, it shows GHG impact but you also should calculate criteria air pollutant reduction.

Why climate funders don't fund housing policy, and why they oughtta On the philanthropic obsession with electric vehicles and why Ben Holland and Caroline Spears think state-level housing policy is our next great climate opportunity.

Want durable climate coalitions? Go where people feel it: affordability. Housing + transportation are the biggest monthly bills. Policies that let more people live near jobs/services/transit cut costs *and* emissions. Volts featuring @spears.bsky.social www.volts.wtf/p/why-climat...

Forget EVs. Cycling is revolutionising transport Pedal power is booming, spinning up a new culture war

“In London cyclists now outnumber cars in the City by 2 to 1. Paris, where they now outnumber motorists across the whole city, is catching up with Europe’s traditional bike capitals, Amsterdam & Copenhagen…In Copenhagen, bikes account for almost half of commuter trips to work/school.” @economist.com

I’m running for DC mayor to build more housing and lower costs Janeese Lewis George, GGWash’s pick for DC mayor, outlines her plan to build more homes in the District.

“Right now, our housing shortage means that the growth of one community comes at the expense of another, but I know a city where our successes are shared and we no longer have to compete for a scarce supply of homes is possible.”

The DC Streetcar is done, ten years and one month after it started operating on H Street NE. It could have been wonderful; it could have been extended. Instead, it was a victim of apathy and lack of caring. Long live the streetcar.

Also a good time to rethink debt financed investments. It’d be better to have a new metro station than a massive parking garage especially when Metro already has the spaces
available!

Chair @chmnmendelson.bsky.social could always redirect funds to build and infill station and rely on all the regional WMATA parking garages at metro stations!

Animals rely on farmers to take care of them. Use the chart below to write and draw about chores on the farm. Think about what you would do in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

Grown-up Tip: As your child writes about farm chores, make a connection to any chores they might have at home. Discuss the types of animals they might care for on their farm, such as cows, chickens, horses, and sheep.

I think homework packets are over confident in parents knowledge of chores for farm animals.

I asked my daughter, “what cows eat”and she said “blueberries.” I said “sure, why not and maybe!”

Of nerdy urbanist interest: Next week the D.C. Council will cast a first vote on @brianneknadeau.bsky.social's bill to allow for new D.C. buildings up to six stories tall to have only a single stairwell in them, instead of the current two. Proponents say it creates more residential space.
