As the South African billionaire eyes a $2 trillion IPO for SpaceX, it’s worth considering how to make sense of a world that rewards ‘Muskism.’
The social contract of AI as a probabilistic pastiche of the training data of history ??
Our May issue is here! This one features an AI package as well as Spring Books. We have @jacobsilverman.com on the death of an AI whistleblower, @elienyc.bsky.social on the future of AI judges, @bentarnoff.com on "The AI Paradox," and more.

3. Star Trek isn’t about the rush to get to space. It is about choosing who we will be to each other, wherever we are. If we are warlike, that will follow us into space. If we choose to invest in caring, not killing (as the Global Women’s Strike demands), that is who we will be in space.
Since today is First Contact Day (the day in Star Trek when humans meet their first aliens, Vulcans) it’s worth talking about that story a bit and how it can inform our analysis of Artemis.
This involves a lot of spoilers from the film Star Trek: First Contact 🖖🏽

Detroit, NYC, DC and Philly murders through March per year since 1960
New York City, Washington DC and Philadelphia all are reporting the fewest murders through Q1 ever recorded (note that NYC's data is only through March 29 but the city should easily set a new low). Detroit reported the fewest murders recorded there through March since 1964.
This month, we're talking Muskism-- live and in studio with @quinnslobodian.com and @bentarnoff.com

I wrote about Quinn Slobodian and Ben Tarnoff’s Muskism for @theguardian.com —it’s a brilliant take on why we ought to focus on the hellish 21st century update on Fordism rather than the man himself.
Congrats to @quinnslobodian.com for winning a National Book Critics Circle Award for Hayek's Bastards!!!!!!!! www.nytimes.com/2026/03/26/b...
Quinn and I chatted with John Guida at the NYT about Iran, Musk, Hegel, sovereignty, mind viruses, and social contracts
this is a huge deal and a sign of the changing legal tides for big tech. the plaintiffs attorneys here were early adopters of a novel legal strategy that uses product liability law to sidestep tech companies' go-to defense (section 230) and hold them accountable for defective or negligent design
