Panel 1)
All the books say
to not sleep next to you

Panel 2)
They say to try to get you to sleep
in your own bed

Panel 3)
to teach you
independence

Panel 4)
I remember the books
as I lie here next to you

Panel 5)
on the fold out mattress
in your room

Panel 6)
Next to your bed
Where you are not sleeping

Panel 7)
And at first I think
I have failed

Panel 8)
but then
You cuddle up to me

Panel 9)
And your tiny hand
grabs on to my jumper

Panel 10)
And you smell like play-doh
and cotton buds

Panel 11)
And I think
One day you will not want me here next to you

Panel 12)
One day you will want to sleep at your friends houses
To sleep at your girlfriends (or boyfriends) houses
To stay out all night

Panel 13)
You will smell of aftershave and leather and your own life
And that will be great

Panel 14)
You must live your own life, of course you must
That is the whole point

Panel 15)
But for now
You smell of play-doh and cotton buds

Panel 16)
And we are both
Exactly where we need to be.

One Japanese town sorts waste into 40 different categories. How does Australia’s recycling compare? Kerbside wheelie bins have been used in Australia since the 1980s but the recycling rate is stuck at 44%. Will another recycling bin make a difference? * Sign up for climate and environment editor Adam Morton’s free Clear Air newsletter here There’s no garbage truck in Kamikatsu. Instead, the Japanese town’s 1,400 residents take their waste to the local recycling centre, or “Gomi station”, and sort it themselves into one of 40 different categories. Now on the multilingual margins, can Japanese bookstores be more than just a vibe? While some travel companies are now offering book-centric tours around Jimbocho, foreign visitors are often leaving bookstores empty-handed, despite intentions to buy books.

Visitors come to explore the book scene, but are left lost in translation, roaming Jimbocho empty-handed. Are Japanese businesses looking to capitalize on the opportunity?

Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.

I also accidentally bought an AI written book and it was absolutely terrible. The first five sentences i was like “wtf is going on here?” We need to demand automatic refund mechanisms for this, and now.

If you’re a Hachette author you should be talking to your editors and teams about this. If they’re using AI to counter AI, it’s still AI. And it may also be giving your work to the machine, serving it up on a contractual platter.

Language Matters
Why English is so hard to learn
Marlene Davis
YOU think English is easy? Check out the following.
1. The bandage
was wound around
the wound.
11. The insurance was invalid for the invalid in his hospital bed.
12. There was a row among the oarsmen about who would row. 13. They were too close to the door to close it.
14. The buck does funny things when the does (females) are present.
15. A seamstress and a sewer fell
2. The farm was cultivated to produce down into a sewer line.
produce.
3. The dump was so full that the workers had to refuse more refuse.
4. We must polish the Polish furniture shown at the store.
5. He could lead if he would get the lead out.
6. The soldier decided to desert his tasty dessert in the desert.
7. Since there is no time like the pres- ent, he thought it was time to present the present to his girlfriend.
8.A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
9. When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
10. I did not object to the object which he showed me.
16. To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
17. The wind was too strong to wind the sail around the mast.
18. Upon seeing the tear in her painting she shed a tear.
19.I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
20. How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?
Heteronyms
These are brilliant. Homonyms or homographs are words of like spelling, but with more than one meaning and sound.
When pronounced differently, they are known as heteronyms.
