Happy Birthday Michael Caine! Seen here in one of my favourite movies of his: THE ROMANTIC ENGLISHWOMAN (1975). Caine reportedly made this as a conscious ‘art’ movie and the reason he didn’t make a film for purely artistic merits again. It doesn’t have a great reputation but I think it’s wonderful.

Pam Grier in HIT MAN (1972), a film by George Armitage. It was based upon the novel ‘Jack Returns Home’ by Ted Lewis, which was also the basis for GET CARTER (also 1972). MGM optioned the book and figured they could squeeze another movie out of it for the ‘blaxploitation’ market.‬

Tonight I’m planning to watch the made-for-TV thriller SKETCH ARTIST (1992),m starring Jeff Fahey, Sean Young and Drew Barrymore. It was the directorial debut of Phedon Papamichael, better known as a cinematographer who regularly worked with the likes of Katt Shea, James Mangold and Alexander Payne.

Nicole Kidman in DOGVILLE (2003), a film by Lars von Trier. I vividly remember working at the Kino Cinema in Cork when we screened this. Due to its length we had an intermission and used the intermission card from THE LORD OF THE RINGS (with that distinctive font) borrowed from another theatre.
