'A Solution, But To What Problem?' Experts Say AVs Are The Elephant In The Room, But There's Still Time To Figure Out Their Role - Streetsblog New York City Want to know more about autonomous vehicles? Join us at "The Future of Transportation" seminar held last week at the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College.

Last week I joined a spicy panel asking whether/how AVs fit into NYC. Here's a summary.

Me: "It’s just too inefficient to have individuals inside a big box of a car. I don’t care how it’s operated. That’s just not how what you scale to make New York City a faster, more-efficient and safer place."

An embarassment of riches when it comes to local journalism in Pittsburgh.

This is great news for Pittsburgh! The non-profit that owns the Baltimore Banner has purchased the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

I'm so curious to see what direction the paper will take. I love the Baltimore Banner so I have high hopes.

I understand this sentiment but if we don't recognize that the United States of America was founded on civilian harm (slavery) and has committed it throughout our history, we will never be able to end it.

What Trump says is terrible but this is not a party line issue. It is a US issue.

As a former NYC Mayor's Office employee, I appreciated Mamdani's campaign, but also questioned how he'd do it when his main policy commitments were responsibilities of the state.

It's important to hold him (and any elected official) to account.

Hope he listens!

Lebanon's war death toll has risen to 2,055, according to the country's health ministry.

Thanks to Phillip Bump for communicating in one Bluesky what I've been trying to express for ages.

The US secretly bombed Laos an average of every eight minutes for nine years. 50+years later, 33% of the country is covered in about 80 million unexploded bombs that still kill and injure civilians.

To go containers of hummus, baba ghanoush, tabboukeh, and loobyeh

My body is in Pittsburgh but my heart os with Lebanon. Fortunately, we have many great Lebanese restaurants here so I decided to support one (easy decision).

I highly recommend Kassab's on the South Side.

Any other suggestions?

There's a sentiment that people in Lebanon have suffered this unimaginable pain for generations so they are "resilient" and therefore better equipped to navigate it.

But I believe the opposite is true.

This isn't normal. For anyone.

Finally realized why I abhor the term "resilient" when it is applied to people who face unimaginable suffering. It's a way to lessen the guilt of those who are responsible (and their affiliates).

A person or group's resilience doesn't make their suffering less painful.

Yes, I checked the schedule before posting. Walking to the New Carrollton Metro was very easy. New Carrollton is extremely walkable. Grocery, schools, library, transit, shopping, etc. It's the most accessible location in the DMV, IMHO. But I'm biased (with a PGC native-sized chip on my shoulder).

Yes, I finally made it to Cleveland after four years in Pittsburgh and it was marvelous. I loved the buildings downtown! But I made the mistake of saying the Cleveland policy folks I was visiting could do an exchange with Pittsburgh. They said not if the Browns were playing. They were not joking.

I grew up in Prince George's County and had to go to Annapolis sometimes back in the late 90s/early 00s. I recall an MTA bus between Annapolis and DC stopping at New Carrollton, but it looks like that ended. I always said I could get anywhere walking to the New Carrollton Metro. Guess not anymore.

Don’t tell anyone about Pittsburgh Seeking refuge from the war in Ukraine, I found myself in a city that first seemed empty, but then slowly revealed its welcoming spirit and underground culture.

"People have forgotten how important culture is — how important it is to give artists the possibility to create, the possibility to make mistakes, the possibility to think. Artists create culture, and culture turns animals into human beings."

Thought this would be about the Secret War in Laos when the US secretly dropped 2 million tons of ordnance from '64-'73, making Laos the most heavily bombed country per capita. Five decades on, 1/3 of Laos is covered in about 80 million unexploded US bombs.

It's not. But still an interesting read.

The Metro has 2.5-foot aluminum stops! And they are on sale!

Very tempting to spend $65 to share my New Carrollton pride...

And get a matching one for my Takoma Park partner.

And make a whole WMATA map in our yard.
