And our society is only really possible BECAUSE OF plastics right now. Putting aside consumer goods (electronics, etc.), our entire medical profession is based on using sterile, mostly single-use plastics. It's how we stopped dying in droves of infection while in the hospital 100 years ago.

Also, forget about energy for a second:

99% of plastic is currently made from chemicals derived from fossil fuels and we STILL don't have a good alternative for that.

Unlike energy (because we have wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear), we DON'T have a good alternative for making plastics

The cost to make a barrel of oil today is anywhere between $20US (Saudi Arabia) & $90US (deep sea). What happens when the cost to produce "cheap" oil jumps 2x, 3x, or 4x? The market lost 10% when the price of oil jumped last month. We are so fucked that the "capitalists" don't understand economics.

It boggles the mind even from a "greed is good"/capitalism angle because everyone is assuming that our coal & oil supplies are like a box of cereal & a milk jug (i.e. the last drops will be as easy to get as the first), but that's probably incorrect & we don't know WHEN it will be cost-prohibitive.

Oh, but it gets worse. We only have about 47 years of oil left on the planet at our current usage.

We are at the end of the fossil fuel era not JUST because we're killing the Earth (which we are) but because if we don't replace it NOW, we'll be back in the stone age before the year 2100.

That means that besides being in a race against time to save the planet, we are ALSO In a race against time to replace any dependency of coal before there is more coal forever. Also (and this is BASIC economics), as the global coal supply dwindles, the COST of coal will skyrocket.

So here's the thing with coal (besides it being bad for the planet):

We have MAYBE 140 years worth of coal left (forever) at our current usage which provides (about) 1/3 of current global energy.

If we gut renewables/low-carbon sources, the global coal reserve could drop down to 45 years
