Two coroners in Missouri made anti-immigrant remarks — then performed the autopsy of a man who died in ICE custody. Now, they’re refusing to release the autopsy report.

This reporting has taken quite a lot of time and nearly $1k in fees to obtain autopsy reports. If you want to support my work uncovering the truth about ICE deaths — which you’ll only find at Doom — subscribe or contribute here:

Previously, I reported on the strange case of a man who died in ICE detention in El Paso — where the U.S. Army is now conducting his autopsy.

Obtaining these reports for the nearly 50 people who have died in ICE custody under Trump has been my mission — and great challenge — for several months now.
justinglawe.substack.com/p/coroners-m...
What does the report show? Likely that the man did, in fact, take his own life, unfortunately. But this isn’t the point: ICE deaths have reached record highs, and autopsy reports from local authorities provide basic transparency.
justinglawe.substack.com/p/coroners-m...
In this case, two self-professed MAGA coroners are refusing to release an ICE detainee’s death by (incorrectly) citing state law. The bottom line: they could release the report but simply refuse to do so.

The situation is reflective of the great difficulty in straightening out the circumstances of the record number of ICE deaths that have taken place under Trump — walled-off facilities, federal bureaucracy, local LEA, etc.

Today at @americandoom.bsky.social: Two coroners in Missouri made anti-immigrant remarks — then performed the autopsy of a man who died in ICE custody. Now, they’re refusing to release the autopsy report.

Sturgill gives hope!
Why are three Republican officials in Georgia fighting in court to have their names officially withheld from documents tied to the FBI election raid?
Today’s @americandoom.bsky.social breaks down this strange development.

Among the evidence/historic stuff and crazy stats here: Sturgill’s new album (which is basically funk) debuted at no. 3 on the Billboard without being on streaming platforms. Simply incredible.
Sets deadline, biggest news story in the world, he gets the attention he needs to survive.
Changes deadline for face-saving reasons, claims victory or says we’re gonna kill ‘em all, gets the attention he needs to feel worth something.
Either way, always dark, small, sad.
Incredible that this line of thinking never seems to apply to the second amendment.
Out today, new feature from @justinglawe.bsky.social: Dispatches. In the first edition, you can read an excerpt from his forthcoming book, If I Am Coming to Your Town, Something Terrible Has Happened - The Life and Times of a Domestic War Correspondent.

My investigation into ICE deaths got me thinking more about immigration, the border, and the invisible lines that divide us. It all seems so unnecessary sometimes.
Today’s excerpt explores that. I hope you’ll read and share.

New at @americandoom.bsky.social, the first edition of Dispatches, where you’ll get the view from the scene — wherever the scene may be.
Today, it’s El Paso, Juárez, and Las Vegas in an excerpt from my forthcoming memoir, out in June.

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and street corners to be seen by men.
[…]
But when you pray, go away by yourself, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”

Democrats are worried about interference in the 2026 midterms - not from Russia or China, but from President Donald Trump.
Journalist @justinglawe.bsky.social points to FBI ballot seizures and ICE's expanding remit as groundwork to take control of the election.

Meanwhile, Trump’s lawyers at the DOJ are making extraordinary arguments in court in Georgia, saying Fulton County doesn’t have Fourth Amendment rights and even challenging state sovereignty in the government’s efforts to retain the ballots and other materials it seized.
zeteo.com/p/trump-dems...
That’s exactly what happened in Fulton County, GA in January. And election officials worry it could happen in November — this time with an ongoing election.
zeteo.com/p/trump-dems...
The feds have seized ballots and equipment in Arizona, Georgia and Puerto Rico. A Republican sheriff in California has also seized ballots — after getting approval from a magistrate judge. Sound familiar?
zeteo.com/p/trump-dems...
Officials are wargaming scenarios in which Trump sends ICE to the polls or uses federal law enforcement to seize ballots and election equipment. Think it can’t happen? It already is.

NEW at @zeteo.com: Election officials across the country are preparing for unprecedented threats to the November midterms — from the president himself.
zeteo.com/p/trump-dems...
An important question seems to be why the president is consuming so much content that contains AI-produced falsehoods and *then* having to go to military leaders to ask whether things he saw actually happened.

Interesting to see ICE become a solution for things perceived as problems by the admin:
- (Overblown) claims of fraud by immigrants in Mpls? Send ICE
- Long airport lines? Send ICE
- False election fraud claims? Send ICE (forthcoming)
I wrote a lot about Bob Mueller across a lot of chapters of his career. I wanted to share two @wired.com pieces that I wrote about his defining life experiences—both a picture of an era of public service all but lost today:
1) His brave *voluntary* service in Vietnam: www.wired.com/story/robert...
He is the seventh person to have allegedly taken his own life under the Trump administration.
As with all detainee deaths, this is how ICE frames the death of Paktiawal, who is effectively a military veteran who aided our special forces in Afghanistan: “Criminal illegal alien” dies.
