Iraq puts an end date on its repatriations from Syria: "Iraq to repatriate all IS-linked nationals from Syria's al-Hol camp by 2027" www.newarab.com/news/iraq-re...
An excellent op-ed that indeed raises the question whether we need and should define this type of violence as terrorism. The risk of over reach should not be underestimated.
well this decision hardly comes as a surprise. Iraq has taken on the immense task of repatriating their citizens. SDF had already announced that Syrian nationals could on voluntary basis return home. In both cases, the support of int humanitarian NGOs are essential which may now be jeopardised.
Excited that my piece got published at @lawfare.bsky.social on antisemitism and Islamophobia in the Netherlands and why it should not be framed as terrorism

While HTS as de-facto government could indeed accept the jurisdiction of ICC, to achieve justice in Syria a multi-layered and multi-faceted approach is needed, not just crimes committed by the Assad regime, but also crimes committed by ISIS, HTS and other rebel groups.
Agree, the implications of designating are different in the respective countries and individuals can and have already been charged for ie inciting to terrorism, material support etc. such as Dallas Humber, Matthew Allison and Pavlov Durov
