This is not an issue unique to Hawaii. Widespread power outages in ANY city often cause closures of mass transit for the same reasons. I personally experienced this in Florence, where a citywide power outage stalled tram service. 5/🧵

NONE of the storm related shutdowns were the fault of HART, Hitachi, or DTS. Widespread power outages attributed to HECO are the reason Skyline was unable to operate. No power, no service. There are backup generators, but only to ensure passengers do not get stranded. 4/🧵

Average weekday boardings have remained steady, Removing the closures and spring break, March’s weekday average ridership was 11,665 a day. This would easily make it the highest performing month 3/🧵

Multiple statewide shutdowns due to the severe weather, public school being on spring break, and widespread power outages pushed ridership down. Despite that, March still achieved higher ridership than February, being the second highest performing month since opening. 2/🧵

Despite the rains, commuters still took Skyline! Here’s March’s ridership statistics:
