"The proposed rule threatens to terminate housing assistance for almost 80,000 low-income people, including 37,000 children, most of whom are U.S. citizens or otherwise “qualified” noncitizens, and to force the harmful separation or displacement of about 20,000 mixed-status families…"

Do work requirements work? @laurenhlb.bsky.social and @chloeneast.bsky.social review the literature and conclude that SNAP work requirements “do not encourage work but do reduce program access.”
Proud to be a signatory on and have my research on the negative economic impacts of immigration enforcement used in this amicus brief arguing the harms of proposed termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
Heading back to my home state to give a talk at University of Texas El Paso!
Thanks Jose Bucheli for the invite!
Can’t wait for good Mexican food and margs.
We’ve updated our primer on SNAP work requirements to reflect changes to policy in Trump 2.0.
These policy changes will leave needy families hungry with no meaningful effects on work.
“When CU can’t recruit and retain talented people because it can’t match the stable wages, protections and voice that peer institutions provide, that loss ripples across the state. Collective bargaining is how CU closes that gap…”

@caitlinpatler.bsky.social (@goldmanschool.bsky.social) is the lead author of an amicus brief co-signed by 140 scholars and submitted to SCOTUS in its consideration of birthright citizenship. Patler's research explores how citizenship and legal status shape mobility.

The American dream is the idea that in the United States, people’s fate is determined by their own merit, not the status of their parents.
But the executive order would create a caste of people who inherit a lesser status from which there could be no escape.
13/ The broader implication: the political consequences of pro-work policies depend critically on the workplace and social environments that new workers enter. Pro work policies may have electoral spillovers that vary substantially across regions, industries, and demographic groups
1/ Excited to share my first solo NBER working paper: “Does Employment Shift Mothers’ Voting Behavior and Political Identity?” Using 5 decades of EITC expansions and welfare reform, I find employment reduces voter turnout & shifts lower-income mothers toward Republican & conservative identification

Check out our union @ucwcolorado.bsky.social to learn more about our campaign to win collective bargaining rights!
Powerful op-ed today on why CU needs collective bargaining for ALL employees
So proud to have @brianckeegan.com as a colleague and union sibling
Me on @nexton9news.bsky.social on why the proposed ban on buying soda with SNAP benefits would not actually improve health
There are real health concerns with soda, but a ban on purchases with SNAP benefits is unlikely to actually change soda consumption

And gave $80b more to ICE last summer
I teach an undergraduate course on agricultural and food policy. In recent years, their assignment has been assessing the impacts of work requirements on employment.
What is a bsolutely fascinating: a certain portion STILL support work requirements, even when they see research like this. Why? ...
Good point! Makes me feel a little better about my work 😀

This is why I am prioritizing building political power in my communities. Mostly through union organizing.
Without power among those who care about evidence, the impact of my research is limited.

Agree.
I’ve had proponents of work requirements deliberately misinterpret my work to support their claims.
It’s not from lack of evidence or knowledge about evidence, it’s twisting evidence in favor of policies they want to support anyway.

I suspect the proponents of work requirements are well aware of (and counting on) the punitive impacts of these provisions.
They're using the pretext of reserving benefits for the "deserving poor" to justify mercilessly slashing the safety net.

The “big beautiful bill” greatly expanded SNAP work requirements for parents
In my paper with @jasonbcook.bsky.social, forthcoming at JPUBE, we ask what similar, existing requirements do
SNAP work requirements for parents deny vulnerable parents SNAP benefits and do not increase their employment
I'm getting to spend my spring break on exciting hobbies like going to the dentist and finally getting around to cleaning my house and catching up on referee reports!
New data on ICE arrests (2015–2025) show that as arrests surge, the share of arrested people with criminal convictions fall sharply, from Chloe N. East, Caitlin Patler, and Elizabeth Cox www.nber.org/papers/w34794
Very excited to be presenting at @columbiauniversity.bsky.social Population Research Center today!
