Mamdani: When I ran for mayor, I said I was going to tax the rich
Well, today we're taxing the rich...
The Anthropic book theft settlement is essentially done, but many more battles remain. I also agree with Catherynne M. Valente's recent essay calling the settlement "blood money." 1/

With this absolutely STUNNING cover, I really must pay tribute to our wonderful designer, Sam Gretton. He would not welcome the attention, I've no doubt, but I've now worked with him for over three years, and his covers are astonishing. As well as this one, here is a thread of a few gorgeous others:
Lady Trent's Field Journal will have a second volume -- add it to your pledge now! And one eager backer can design a new dragon, entering their name in the annals of history as the first to scientifically describe that species! #Kickstarter #ProjectsWeLove

I woke up and this was already fully funded. So congrats to Marie and Avery!!

Finally, I should mention that the pattern deck *itself* is eligible for a Hugo Award, under the umbrella category of "related work." Should you wish to get one for yourself, you can do so here! #HugoAwards #Hugos

The card back design from the Rook and Rose pattern deck, showing a golden spindle, shuttle, and shears, linked by a violet thread that becomes ribbon, against a subtle background of a labyrinth. Credited to Emiko Ogasawara.
And @emiko-ogasawara.bsky.social/Emiko Ogasawara's design for the card back links the spindle, shuttle, and shears of the deck's three suits together with the thread of fate. Eligible in the fan artist category! (To be clear, that's due to other factors, not art quality.) 4-

A grid of twenty-four images of cards from the Rook and Rose pattern deck, with Avery-Liell Kok credited as the artist.
@aliellkok.bsky.social/Avery Liell-Kok's Faces and Masks -- think court card/Major Arcana -- are gorgeous watercolors whose "blind contour" technique creates a shifting, overlapping look that perfectly fits the dream magic of Vraszan. Also pro eligible, near as I can tell! 3-

A grid of forty-five images from the Rook and Rose pattern deck laid out in rows, with A.C. Esguerra credited as the artist
@blueludebar.com/A.C. Esguerra's cards are an intricate series of repeated motifs, compositional layouts, and color groupings that help link them together across the suits. As best as I can navigate the byzantine rules, they are eligible in the pro category! 2-

if you are a bigot or support bigotry or act in a movie built on the profits of hate, people are allowed to not like you 1. because bigotry is bad and 2. because people generally DONT LIKE THINGS THAT HURT THEM. like this is so obvious. it is not 'canceling' it is an exercise in basic human autonomy
Pretty depressed about this country I live in today, so I'm going to share my art. I wrote a book that is in part about growing up queer in India without knowing it. It follows a family of refugees who may be from another reality, living in Calcutta:
Image: teal background. Text: Thank You to the Fandom. Thank you to Fandom Trumps Hate for Supporting DLU. The DLU logo is centered at the bottom of the image.
Fandom really shows up 💙 Huge thanks to Fandom Trumps Hate for choosing DLU as an auction recipient! Their community comes together to support great causes through fanworks—and they’ve raised thousands for disability justice 🙌

That last one sounds harsh but its actually not that bad. This isn't an industry where anyone gets picked up and swept away on a magic carpet of money and fame. This is an industry where being in the position to keep doing the work is, for most of us, the reward.
For folks interested, Goodreads is doing an e-book givaway for The Eye of Leviathan! Sign up here: www.goodreads.com/book/show/24...
Lady Trent's Field Journal will be going live in a few weeks, so sign up here to find out as soon as it does! 4/4

Thank you so much! And I know you've mostly been corresponding with Marie, but THANK YOU for all the wonderful advice and feedback!
Ahahaha. I think we had Cory design that logo about a minute after we sold the duology. So we sent it along when our publisher asked us for our cover thoughts. We're so excited that they incorporated it!
We have a cover!!! With a fantastic blurb (thanks, Kate!), a really cool logo (thanks, Cory!), and a sneak peak at one of our amazing maps (thanks, Tim!) @inkshark.bsky.social @macarrick.bsky.social @swantower.bsky.social @kateheartfield.com www.hachettebookgroup.com/orbit-books/...
Happy St. Patrick's Day, New York.

After 12 years and editing close to a thousand different writers, I've learned there are two edits that will transform a perfectly pleasant human into a nearly homicidal figure:
- Suggesting that a non-grammatical comma used as a pause could be cut.
- Changing an American's use of "grey" to "gray."
the cover image of my spicy comic FAIR TRADE, with faded-purple text on a cream background. the title text's letters, in an antique-looking serif font, are jumbled in a composition resembling an intricately-carved wooden screen that frames a circular vignette of a caravel at sea.
cover image for my out-of-print spicy sketchzine. the image is of two overlaid monochrome images of young men, one in cyan and one in magenta; the overlapping areas of the image are a dark purple. centered overall is title text that spells "FLYBOY" in both Japanese katakana and English letters.
it's late enough to post about spicy comics somewhere, right? one week left to get the @cartoonist.coop bundle i'm in, if sales hit $3000 i'll add my out-of-print nsfw sketchzine for free again 👯♂️ itch.io/b/3495/the-c... #nsfwcomics #nsfwart
Ah, thank you so much (and for the blurb!) When we were first pitching, The Embroidered Book was one of our comps. I loved that book so much, so I'm so chuffed that you liked ours <3
Tagging onto this #HugoAwards thread: with the poetry award returning, let's talk about where to find poems to nominate! I know a lot of people last year felt a bit adrift on that front, so here is a (*very* non-exhaustive) list of suggestions, with links . . . 1/- #Hugos
If you're nominating for the #HugoAwards, may I rec to your attention our wonderful artists for the Rook and Rose pattern deck? I *think* the first two are eligible in the pro artist category and the third in fan (though if you want to be *really* sure, you can nominate them in both). 1- #Hugos
An awards eligibility graphic with one lonely book cover on and some arrows pointing to it for extra drama.
It's odd posting about awards eligibility & asking please consider me when my book's barely out so not many of you have read it.
But I have one sole eligible thing this year, and I'm proud of it in all its briny strangeness. So hey, please consider THE SALT ORACLE if you're nominating? 🖤🖤🖤
