Very happy to be presenting more of my research on ancient diplomatic culture at the upcoming Classical Association Conference. Truly honored to share my work at the largest annual Classics conference in the UK alongside other wonderful scholars.

A couple of German tobacco cards depicting the ancient Near East. The top card shows a Sumerian hunting scene. Beneath that is a card showing a Neo-Assyrian battle scene
My little collection of trading cards depicting the ancient Near East keeps on growing! A couple German tobacco cards from the 1930s this time :)

Started using the studentsā vocabulary by @rheth.bsky.social today! Very easy to use :) I love it already
Studying history and reading novels both get us out of our own heads, the first by helping us to imagine different worlds, and the second by prompting us to inhabit different subjectivities.
Those who do neither are forever imprisoned in the here, the now, and the self.
Nothing beats the joy of opening exactly what you want on Christmas morning. Very excited for this yearās gifts, especially @digkabri.bsky.socialās book! Merry Christmas to you all š

Anyone else ever go on book shopping sprees but ends up buying books you have already read, or is that just me? š¬ Love all of these, so I had to own them.

This Brooklyn Museum photo shows a sketch made in black ink on a stone-coloured limestone flake (known as an ostracon by Egyptologists). The sketch depicts a scene with a cat and a mouse imitating human behaviour. On the right, a tabby cat is drawn in profile with pointed ears, standing on its hind legs in front of a large mouse seated on a folding stool on the left of the scene. The cat is depicted as a servant; in one paw it holds a fan, and offers a plucked duck, in the other paw it holds a piece of linen cloth. The mouse has drooping breasts, wears a long skirt, has a lotus flower on its forehead, and its long tail hangs down over the back of the stool. The mouse holds a dish, a flower, and cloth (often held by pharaohs). Dimensions 8.9 x 17.3 x 1.1 cm. Dated c. 1295ā1075 BC. Animals imitating human behaviour are well-known in Egyptian art. Their meaning is uncertain. Perhaps this sketch is a caricature or illustration of a long-lost fable, perhaps a satire of the royal family, or maybe just a sketch for fun!
To bring a smile to your face, hereās an ancient Egyptian sketch of a tabby cat serving a mouse! š
The artist used a flake of limestone as a sketchpad to draw this comic scene some 3,200 years ago.

Very happy to be presenting at the Beyond Borders Workshop in Edinburgh later this week! Truly honored to join a great group of scholars and to have the opportunity to share my research.
Not sure if it has been brought up, but Diodorus (20.7) says that Agathocles burned his ships after he landed in Carthage. Not sure if thatās the mix up, but provides an alternative from antiquity and not just Cortes (and could say something about Sicilian still being under appreciated maybe?)
Read this while learning Italian a couple of years ago. Although I donāt think I can be of much help with the question, I will say that itās such a wonderful and enriching read! Hope you enjoy it!
@misterjabsticks.bsky.social In case you want to check it out :)
Following my last ancient card post, I wanted to also share this beautiful card of Darius I I just received! From the 1908 Stollwerck Album 10 series. Very fun to hold something so old and cool :)

If you want to check some out, just look up Stollwerk cards. They produced a lot of great looking Classics ones like Phyrrus, Alexander, etc. The descriptions on the back are always fun to read too.
Thatās awesome! I think Iāve come across those Batman cards before. Iāve actually just purchased an even older (1908) card produced by the German chocolate company Stollwerck depicting Darius I. Iāll make sure to post it once I receive it :)
A promotional card produced by the W.D. & H.O. Wills tobacco company depicting the Gate of Xerxes in Persepolis. The card is in a graded holder, and was given the grade of 5 by SGC.
Iām a (baseball) card collector, and recently picked up this 100 year old card of the Gate of Xerxes. I was fascinated to learn how much tobacco, chocolate, and other types of companies used the ancient past in their promotional cardsā¦got me thinking about a possible reception project.
You basically cannot.
Take good care of him, weāll miss him a lot š„²
And yes, I had to ask him to sign my copy of his book. Iām always too shy to do so with other scholars whose work I admire, but I couldnāt miss out on asking him. This copy will always be especial to me now.
Cover page of āThe Hellenistic World and the Coming of Romeā by Erich Gruen, with a hand-written note by the author
I was lucky enough to have breakfast with Erich Gruen this morning. It was honestly one of the best moments of my academic career.
Heās someone I had heard a lot about and who has influenced my ideas and work for a while, and it was great to experience how wonderful of a person he also is.
Appreciate it, Stats!
Brayan Bello, Garrett Crochet, and Jarren Duran all stand together posing for a group portrait down the left field line at Fenway Park with the Green Monster in the background. All three wear the Red Sox City Connect uniforms with green jerseys the same shade as the Green Monster, reading āRED SOXā across the front in white with their respective numbers in yellow. Green hats display the Red Sox āBā logo in white, and pants are white with green piping detail downs the sides.
