Curiously, I find my mother (late 80s) has nostalgia for things that are largely left leaning: cradle-to-grave welfare state, state run NHS, free Education, public service broadcasting etc.

In fairness, that was solved with goal line technology, rather than VAR. However, what most people imagined was that VAR would solve perceived bias. What it creates is mostly another avenue for officials to screw teams over.

VAR needs to operate independently from the on-field refs.

The Plague Dogs. I'm not sure how I missed this as I read the book as a kid but there were a lot of great films in 1982 that didn't do well commercially.

Two dogs escape from a vivisection lab and try to survive in Cumbria. Beautifully animated, not exactly a kids' film.

I watched a fair bit of his Bundesliga winning season with Leverkusen, and whilst there were some thrilling matches, there was some real seat-of-the-pants stuff.

Possibly my favourite Purple album. Actually the third part of a near perfect trilogy with In Rock and Fireball. Highway Star is a wonderful opening track. Smoke on the Water is a classic, but I've probably heard it too often played badly in guitar shops!
