A chalk noticeboard on a pavement reads: "Yates. Join us today for our new men." The outside edge of the board is obscured by garlands of plastic flowers.

Get off of substack.

I will not share your substack link. I won't share it even if you disguise it as a different URL.

There are good alternatives. No, it's not easy, but your readership won't be rated as lower than that of a human trafficker and rapist.

The Ancient Egyptians were fans of board games. So much so that they were often included in grave goods, to pass the time in the Afterlife.

There are four well-known ones:
1. Hounds and jackals
2. Royal Game of Ur
3. Mehen, the snake game
4. Senet, the underworld game

Let's learn about them!

I am stunned every day that programmers as an entire class were offered a choice between "preserve the open-source ecosystem" and "deniably steal GPL-licensed code whenever you want" and slammed the button on the latter with zero hesitation. an incredibly complete act of industry cannibalism

Don't know who would be a #chess tournament organiser. Just had a player withdraw because I didn't email them individually to let them know I had received their entry. They hadn't paid. They received an automated email. But they wanted me to email them personally before they paid a penny.

The discipline she competed in wasn't sex-segregated but it would be interesting to know if the other female showjumpers were afforded the same dignity.

I think people need to be less afraid of collaboration. Yes, I'm a creative, but I'm not good at every creative task- naming characters and places, for example. It's good, actually, to accept you can't do it all- and then find a human collaborator.

Trying to come up with an innocent explanation for why this is question *one* on my GP's healthcare form. Not name, or how to address me as a person. This.

"Events" aren't chill full stop though. They can't be. They hinge on FOMO to drive player numbers and lead people to spend money at a time that doesn't suit them.

The danger to my job from AI isn't that AI can do my job, it's that my job is made even more precarious by the way AI is shaping ideas of the value of work. It can't do my job, but it can be part of convincing people (incorrectly) that my job isn't necessary.

I really feel like the phenomena here is the poison that is fandom. With all the ick + misbehavior + territorialism. Which is imo especially gross when it overwhelms the natural audience. People can't just enjoy things. It has to be their whole damn personality.

This is also a TTRPG discourse post.

Always be suspicious when the media uses the passive.

Free museum entry isn’t “coming to an end” on its own.

Some people have decided they want to take it away from us, & want us to think the decisions they are making are inevitable rather than choices by them. And journalists are helping them.

This whole fight over transgender stuff happening on X is so weird to me. The most notable thing about trans issues in the last 5 years has been the enormous, coordinated anti-trans activism campaign across the right, aided by moral cowards in the center.

But that campaign is *never mentioned*.

I hear a lot of people saying that ai makes art accessible.. well I personally think that's bullshit- so I made this to drive my point home.
