A screen grab of a Guardian Opinion piece entitled "From Barcelona to Paris, cities thrive with women in charge".
Cities don’t thrive when space is owned by cars, they thrive when it’s shared by people.
From superblocks to school streets, this is what's possible when cities place care, empathy, and inclusion at their core—and why leadership matters more than ever.

Totally. Small d downtown vs. capital D Downtown, I suppose.
As long as people know the difference between the humble, hardworking hamlet of Wenonah and those fancy, coffee shop-having capitalists in Keewaydin, I'm happy.

I think of both of those areas as part of "downtown," even though I know they technically aren't. I could certainly be in the minority (or all alone) in that thinking. In any case, I imagine the survey is really about the central part of the city, and they're using "downtown" more colloquially.

The robot that won a half marathon fell down and needed help from humans to get back up.
It didn't. The NYT story has this note.
It's funny to write that it "picked itself back up with help from humans." That's not what "pick itself up" means.

There's nothing cooler than telling other people what they should do to celebrate their teams. Next, they should tell people how they should feel and what they should care about.

As far as I can tell, everybody on Minneapolis BlueSky is spending the day deeply engaging with local politics and everyone on Saint Paul BlueSky is spending the day eating a giant sandwich and drinking beer. And that feels right to me.

Yes! Functionally worse, ugly, and they all have "up" arrows (so you know something good is happening) and gear icons (because we're working hard over here!). I'm not a passionate person, except for my hatred of those slides.

Last term, Council President Payne led the most productive council in recent history. We aren’t stopping this term either. Progressives are delivering.
I don’t want to hear about a lack of “priorities” when progressives are the only ones bringing policy and solutions forward. 2/

“There will never be a bell loud enough, a helmet strong enough, or clothing bright enough, to make up for poor infrastructure.” Billboard ad saying “join us in fighting for safe streets, by Vision Zero Vancouver, ad by Tom Flood.
There will never be enough victim-blaming to make up for poor infrastructure and missing leadership. But it sure makes a nice distraction for decision-makers hiding from responsibility, right?

Wide Amsterdam street jammed with colourful cars in the 1970s.
Remember this picture, & others like it, every time you hear someone in your city say "we're not Amsterdam."
This was #Amsterdam in the 1970s.
Many of the cities we admire made tough choices regarding cars in the past, and are still making better choices today.
Better choices instead of excuses.

“It’s not my duty as Mayor to make sure you have a parking spot. It’s the same as if you bought a cow or a refrigerator, and then asked me where you’re going to put them.” – Miguel Anxo Fernandez Lores, long time Mayor of Pontevedra, Spain
Remember, don’t buy a cow, or a car, and expect your city to give you someplace to park it. #UrbanTruth
