6. Evelyn Boyd (1924-2023) was the second black woman to earn a PhD in mathematics.

After finishing her doctorate at Yale in 1949, she performed research and taught at several schools before taking on roles at IBM and NASA where she worked on several projects for the Apollo program.

5. Roy Clay Sr. (1929-2024) was yet another black Silicon Valley Godfather.

He landed a job at Hewlitt-Packard and joined to launch the Computer Science division in 1965, leading the company’s entrance into the computer market as Director.

4. Dr. Clarence Ellis (1943-2014) was the first African-American to earn a PhD in computer science.

Among many contributions, he’s well-known for his pioneering work in groupware and operational transformation, which enabled real-time collaborative editing of documents in products like Google Docs

3. Dr. Shirley Jackson (1946-Present) was the first black woman to earn a doctorate degree at MIT.

And it’s crazy to think she was still a child when the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954) Supreme Court decision opened up public schools to all students regardless of race or ethnicity.

2. Dr. Mark Dean (1957-Present) is a Silicon Valley Godfather.

After he earned his first degree in Electrical Engineering, he began working at IBM, where he was a leader in developing the PC.

He holds 3 of IBM’s original 9 patents for the PC.

1. Lisa Gelobter (1971 - Present) invented the Shockwave technology that put animation on the web.

By the time she earned her Bachelor's from Brown University at 40, she was highly connected in her field.

She worked for the DOE under the Obama administration and founded tEQuitable in 2017.
