I think USians need to find ways to grieve what's happening in the U.S. without reproducing imperial logics that the U.S. is "losing a position as the world superpower" or "as the leader in science" or "as the leader in research" or "as the leader in . . . "
Josh: [looking at phone] Wow, the bass player of Nirvana is a "law-n-order" reactionary centrist now? Dina: Oh, you didn't know that? Dude hates homeless people Josh: I guess grunge really is dead, huh Dina: Meanwhile the king of soft dad rock Dave Matthews is out there loudly opposing ICE and the genocide in Gaza [Josh is staring blankly into space] Lady:...Josh? [Josh is making complex mental calculations, an imaginary load bar says 'RECALIBRATING MUSIC OPINIONS"]
I loved this comic
The Sexy Owl God of Dangerous White Pants. The image shows a topless humanoid figure with an excellent physique and wearing tight white pants with an astonishing bulge, and an owl head decorated with flowers.

Kollivay Pey (fire-breathing ghost) by Shyam
Muhnochwa by Rashmi Ruth Devadasan
Yatudhani by Appupen
There are shadowy demons from ancient scripture like the Yatudhana and Yatudhani -- the kollivay pey of Tamil Nadu -- the btsan of Ladakh -- as well as urban legends like Delhi's Monkey Man and the Muhnochwa (the flying face-scratcher beast that some believed was a bioengineered Pakistani weapon)
My hometown has a hyphy new lit mag. Please consider membership
(Ok technically my hometown is Berkeley, but most of school was Oakland)
i grew up in edmonton, canada and then had to move to india when i was about fourteen. it feels like one person abruptly died and then this other person had to quickly form itself from whatever was available. it's not the usual immigrant experience. i don't know what it is.
Evolutionary biologists: Whales come from hippos
Archaeologists: Hippos come from Wales
Indian states should also have state sharks!
I vote scalloped hammerhead for Tamil Nadu
There's an international hardcover edition out from @watkinswisdom.bsky.social too!

Ghosts, Monsters, and Demons of India by J Furcifer Bhairav & Rakesh Khanna. Indian edition, cover by Appupen shows a strangely-shaped tree with a ghostly sari-clad figure standing nearby. Her hair covers her face completely.
An Appupen illustration from the book of the Kumaoni hunter-ghost Airi and his ghost-hounds
A Shyam illustration from the book of an Arakkan, a sort of angry giant demon. This one has a horned helmet, a bare chest, and poorly pedicured toenails. He is about to stomp on the viewer and squash them
Ghosts, Monsters, and Demons of India -- International edition
I haven't posted about GHOSTS, MONSTERS, AND DEMONS OF INDIA in a while.
This is an encyclopædia I had way too much fun co-writing, full of spooky entities from Indian folklore--including many from necrodiversity hotspots like the Western Ghats & Northeastern forests

Maith thú!
I always wonder how much was Columbia and how much was the Harlem Renaissance going on next door
As an Indian I cannot get over the idea that it was Columbia that produced the architect of my nation’s constitution and that the same institution has willingly incarcerated/deported the potential Ambedkars of our age. Columbia as an actual educational mission is dead. It is carceral imperial space.
It'll be fun to watch Spinosaurus climb up the charts over the next few years
"If you have two rupees, take one for food and one for a book." -- B.R. Ambedkar
(Possibly apocryphal? But he was surely a proponent of reading widely.)
Happy Ambedkar Jayanti. #JaiBhim
Yeah they have those in India too. There is a certain charm. But yes, the drum machines are definitely more rousing. mycookwareshop.com/products/div...
We asked Alex Werth, author of “On Loop: Black Sonic Politics in Oakland,” to make a playlist of songs and sounds that he thinks are characteristic of Oakland in some way. Here’s a thread, pulled from this piece: www.oaklandreviewofbooks.org/black-sonic-...
As the machines age the tempo of the bell hammers and drum mallets tend to get out of phase, which makes them sound even better
Just walked by a temple with one of these babies banging away and I gotta say I woud welcome a religious movement based around the development of more/weirder/wackier versions of such machines for worship

Yashica Dutt recommends The Blaft Book of Anti-Caste SF. With smaller inset pics of editor R Talitha Samuel, author Rahee Punyashloka, and translator Divya Kalavala
"This is where this delicious anthology comes in: naming feelings that often seem unnameable... drawing the reader into a world that caste-oppressed people inhabit all their lives — yet one that mostly goes unnoticed, or is wilfully ignored.”
