Science-folks: If we run 100 experiments, we might find 1 or 2 of them may have results that can make many dollars.
NZ Govt: Excellent. We will fund those 1 or 2 experiments.

Still up for a non-nematode worms episode π
"Worms", organisms with a long thin-type body plan, are found across many phyla. Saying you've done worms because you looked at Nematodes is like saying you can't do an episode on cats because you did one on frogs and they're even the same phyla.
Nice one. Back when I was younger I had an aim to be somewhere or doing something new (even if it was very local) for every birthday. Maybe I'll resurrect that.

These are incredible and I maintain that the first one and now also the fourth one would make awesome rug design.
I'm just tied up making a surprise for colleagues at the moment but I definitely want to have a go. Trouble is a big rug takes sooooo long.
These are so cute!

π sometimes you don't want to draw too much attention to yourself. Esp with the "why are we funding that rubbish" brigade always on the lookout for victims
But if you ever feel you want to chat worms, mud, ecosystem disturbance, or ocean acidification let me know!
Omg anytime! Let me take you to the mud....! But it is hard out there as a scientist at the moment. I would be keen but I would of course need permission to do something like that first and the time and money on my end or support it. So I can see how people might be ambivalent.
This is how I feel every time I hear someone with Bluetooth speakers in the backcountry.
Comment from Victoria University: The Govtβs science overhaul prioritises commercial outcomes, but risks narrowing the very research pipeline that fuels long-term innovation.
It's been too long since I worked on crabs because I would currently fail this....
