and neither can the private sector & private foundations
For social science: *63 percent* of all social and behavioral science research in the United States is funded by the NSF through the social, behavioral, and economic sciences directorate.
Only speaking for myself, but actually speaking out about the world events that we study (for example, mass atrocities, human rights violations, etc.)
ngl this is probably the most useful thing I've made thus far, a comprehensive feed equivalent of paper-picnic.com
chat i'm going to ask a somewhat prickly question:
what do you (fellow political scientists) want out of your professional association right now
(knowing that this is a sample of Very Online People and folks with wildly differing opinions)
1. In the most extreme bathroom ban moving in the nation, Idaho's House has passed a bathroom ban with a potential 5 year prison sentence for 2nd offense-using the bathroom.
It even counts "offenses" of using the bathroom in other states.
It now moves to the Senate.
UVA Emergency Alert:
Avoid the area of Shannon Library
Bomb threat reported at Shannon Library 160 McCormick Rd. The building is being evacuated. Avoid the area.
JD Vance is a classic predator and he learned it in part at Ohio State University, as you can see from all the scandals engulfing that university right now that are based on the same mentality he's displaying here.
Good luck guys
*or our professional associations 😅
Just a periodic reminder that institutions will not save us, and expecting them to do so will only result in disappointment
Maybe it’s just me but isn’t it a good idea to read—& understand the context behind—a petition before signing?
The petition to “safeguard” @isanet.bsky.social’s “core mission” is a blatant attempt to prevent the GC from voting on a BDS resolution.
Have the vote. Who wins wins, who loses loses.
Also… isn’t it important to define political speech before curtailing it? 🤔
More generally, where was the concern about political speech impeding the “core mission” when @isanet.bsky.social condemned Russia’s agressive war against Ukraine, to cite just one case?
The Israel exception is… something.
Apropos of nothing, someone please explain to me when censorship and circumventing democratic procedures ever result in positive outcomes?
I’ll wait.
This is why Democrats need to compete EVERYWHERE.
We won’t win every race, but it’s stupid and irresponsible to simply forfeit certain races to incumbents. Always but especially now, we need competitive elections. And at the bare minimum, make them spend money defending seats they had won by 17 pts
This is a clarifying moment: one that reveals the particularly vicious form of authoritarianism taking root in America today www.vox.com/policy/47639...
We're going to liberate the people of Greenland from cancer
I’ve been a proud wesleyan alum for years but especially proud given how @msroth.bsky.social has been a leading voice of reason and justice this past year.
Worth noting that the @wsj.com has joined with the @nytimes.com and Bellingcat to say that ICE is lying in its description of the shooting of Alex Pretti. The video evidence more and more supports the view that this was a gratuitous execution. www.wsj.com/us-news/vide...
Trump posts an unhinged rant about his $400 million ballroom the day after federal agents shot and killed Alex Pretti in Minnesota.
People in winter clothes at a vigil for Alex Pretti. One person in a medical mask and gloves holds a poster that says JUSTICE FOR ALEX PRETTI. A headline reads: "Alex Pretti, the Man Killed by Agents, Was a Nurse and U.S. Citizen" Photo by David Guttenfelder/The New York Times
Alex Pretti, who was fatally shot by Border Patrol agents on Saturday, was a registered nurse who worked in the ICU at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Minneapolis. “He wanted to be helpful, to help humanity and have a career that was a force of good in the world,” a colleague said. trib.al/0Yb3jXF
New YouGov poll: Abolish ICE is now at a *record high* level of support in the United States
46% support
41% oppose
Independents are +12 on abolishing ICE
19% of Republicans now support abolishing ICE as well
DHS has shot 12 people during immigration enforcement operations since September:
Murphy on Bovino: "That was a bone-chilling interview. I was shaking while I was listening to it, in large part bc it takes just an unbelievable amount of gall to lie to the American public. Everybody saw that video ... it should freak the public out that the Trump administration lies this easily"
It's so amazing that "sorry chud but you DON'T have a 2nd amendment right to bear arms" is now literally the official GOP position
Low energy Trump.
Statement on Greenland from the PM of Denmark.
Statement on Greenland from the PM of Norway.
Statement on Greenland from the PM of Sweden.
Statement on Greenland from the President of Finland.
Donald Trump’s threats against Greenland undermine NATO, but also risk fatally harming cooperation among the A7 Arctic states.
Our Nordic allies are clear and united that Greenland is part of K. of Denmark and its future is for Greenlanders to decide.
Canada must be as clear.
This story details that the teen they detained for six months was just about to graduate high school early at the age of 16.
Definitely the kind of irredeemable criminal monster we don’t want in America.
Last year, there was a big debate on SM about using "delve" as an obvious AI tell. The postcolonials were miffed! The colonials just didn't understand why. As a postcolonial, even if English is your first language, it is a particular version of imposed English. Lose-lose. Again.
