Can you spot the spotted anemone shrimp? 👀

Nearly transparent, it blends into swaying sea anemones so well that only tiny spots give it away. This isn't just beauty, it's survival, helping it stay hidden from predators. 🌊🦐

#DidYouKnow that the name "Sarteneja" came from the distorted pronunciation of its original Mayan name "Tza-ten-a-ha", which means "water between the rocks"? This northern village is home to the largest fishing community in #Belize.

💭 #DidYouKnow some corals can live for hundreds — even thousands — of years? 🪸 These ancient reef builders support entire ocean ecosystems, but rising temps, pollution, overfishing & coastal development are putting them at risk. 🌊 Protect our corals, protect our oceans.

Believe it or not, flatfish like this peacock flounder aren’t born flat! As babies they swim upright with an eye on each side. 👀 As they grow, one eye migrates to the other side. 😲 This lets them lie flat on the seafloor with both eyes up — perfect for hiding and hunting.

Monday evening traffic at Shark Ray Alley 🚦

#DYK Nurse sharks might look like they’re in a rush, but they’re actually quite chill. While some sharks have to keep swimming to breathe, nurse sharks can rest on the seafloor and pump water over their gills, no rush hour needed.

#DidYouKnow eating #lionfish is a healthy choice? They’re rich in heart-healthy omega-3s.

As an invasive species, lionfish prey on important reef fish, so eating them helps protect ecosystems.

#Funfact 🦀: The shy face crab gets its name because it literally hides its face. 🫣 It tucks in its legs and folds its large claws over its face, forming a compact, box-like shape for protection when it feels threatened. Which is why it’s also called a box crab!

Great blue herons are common along Belize's coastline, where they patiently hunt fish, crabs, and other small prey. You can identify them by their tall stature, long yellowish bill, blue-gray body, and the black stripe that extends from the eye to the back of the head.
