Just picked up "Visual Differential Geometry and Forms" by Tristan Needham. This quote from Michael Atiyah is spot on and is why when I teach complex numbers to biologist I start with their geometric meaning & not enigmatically as solutions of the quadratic eqn, as I was taught at A-level.
