Ah, I see now. When I saw Aretha I read it as "Athena" and was thinking of the SNK game. That's why Yanoman was so unfamiliar. But neat to see the company is sharing and displaying original art

What's Yanoman?
ISFDB is astounding! When I discover a new artist doing any kind of commercial illustration from that era, I can look them up and get a glimpse of the rest of their catalog. Then I'll even look at other artists for the same publisher. It's a treat! Glad it will be a help for you too ๐
It's always such a pleasure seeing new-to-me RPG art! I was fortunate to acquire this unidentified Ys painting by Yasuhiro Kagami. The depicted characters align to Ys III: Wanders from Ys. It's actually not a series I've played yet but I just really liked the art and how it was painted!
Lovely promo art for Neutopia II by Hudson Soft. Released for the PC Engine in 1991โฆ

This art really is lovely
Box art by Bob Wakelin
Box art by Yuji Kaida
Box art by Boris Vallejo
This cover art is also by Michael Whelan @michaelwhelan.bsky.social
Richard Hook is the cover artist
Awesome art! Now you've got to add to your posts the illustrator who did the cover art to these books! This one is by the fantastic @michaelwhelan.bsky.social, but in general the artists can often be looked up via the Internet Speculative Fiction Database www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.c...
Sometimes Launchbox randomly has high-res images for certain games, including this one for Crater Raider. Based on the way Kevin Davidson's signature is also obscured (in black area in the center foreground), I suspect this image also originated from a painting acquired from Kevin and posted to CAF
And lastly, since Mobygames doesn't actually have a complete list of Kevin Davidson's Interplay box art, here's what I have:
1. Battle Chess (1989)
2. Future Wars (Amiga, DOS | 1990)
3. Out of This World (Amiga, Apple IIgs, SNES | 1991/2)
4. Star Trek: 25th Anniversary (1992)
Other than work for Boone Corporation and Interplay, in 1985, Kevin Davidson did the box art for a Macintosh variant of Missile Command called MacCommand, published by Creighton Development, Inc.
Curiously enough, Kevin Davidson's later work for Interplay might actually stem back to his early start with Boone Corporation, as Interplay was founded in Boone's wake by former Boone developers: Brian Fargo, Troy Worrell, Jay Patel, and Rebecca Heineman en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interpl...
Games That Weren't @gamesthatwerent.com has a page for Final Eclipse that includes an image of the original painting archived from ComicArtFans. Though Kevin Davidson's signature was obscured when posted, OVGA has confirmed with CAF owner that its Kevin's art www.gamesthatwerent.com/gtw64/final-...
Kevin Davidson's Interplay art (Battle Chess, Out of this World) is somewhat documented but he also did box art for Boone Corporation around 1983, including the unreleased title Final Eclipse. The games themselves are quite rare and it can be tough to find decent images online!
Haven't gotten all elements yet, but I think it's enough for a comparison now. Lots of elements from a Frazetta b&w illustration for an Edgar Rice Burroughs book, plus a weight lifter by Vallejo. Kicking guy and kneeling guy are still at large. #TracingTheInfluence samderboo.com/tracing.php?...
I find it interesting that here and on the Bruce Eagle piece that the referenced Frazettas are b&w drawings. I imagine rather than the artists owning a particular book with a few interior illustrations that they instead had a Frazetta book around for reference. I wonder which one?
And of course "Red" Wicks is a typo. The previous message should read "Ren Wicks"
I know you had this one in your original feature on "tracing" but for your reference, Lords of the Rising Sun is also Bruce Eagle (he did a half-dozen or more games for Cinemaware/Spotlight). I suspect the girl was is also a swipe, though maybe Boris instead of Frazetta
Paul used the same swipe for this L. Ron Hubbard Battlefield Earth piece, "Jonnie Goodboy Tyler US Editon" (figure on far left) -- actually, I recognize all 3 figures here as modeled on Boris pieces
Paul E. Stinson frequently swiped Boris, so I was sure that was the case for the back box art for Marauder (Atari 2600, 1982). Was finally able to match this to Boris Vallejo's piece Nubian Warrior (1978)
Most of the Cinemaware/Spotlight catalog is fairly well identified. Probably more I still need to share! While Total Eclipse was kind of a one-off (the only game piece I know Red Wicks did), luckily he included this image among among his portfolio from that era. Unfortunately he passed away in 1997
Ren Wicks (1911โ1997), Total Eclipse computer box art for Cinemaware/Spotlight, 1989
Yep! Metal Morph is by Bruce Eagle. I've been meaning to better publicly document his video game catalog. I'll try and put together a short list in a bit, as I'm sure there are a TON more references to uncover
There we go! Thank you ๐
