Players navigate through jumping puzzles while avoiding enemies in strictly timed stages. Almost released as Super Pitfall II in NA by Activision before being cancelled.

Developed by Human Entertainment, Kamen Rider Black is a beat-em-up with rough controls (up is kick!) until you reach the motorcycle segments. Large-sprite boss fights are also present.

Often positively compared to The Legend of Zelda, it is decidedly more of an action game, with timed levels and almost constant encounters to fend off.

Also, I meant to say "Famicom", not "Super Famicom". :D

Today in #retrogaming, Crystalis, also known as God Slayer - Haruka Tenkuu no Sonata, was released in Japan in 1990 for the Super Famicom.

A sci-fantasy action RPG from SNK, Crystalis is similar to #Zelda in gameplay, but with many systems to explore, and lots of equipment to collect.

Today in obscure retrogaming, Toshi Tensō Keikaku: Eternal City was released on the PC Engine by Naxat in 1991.

A 2D mech-shooter, Eternal City is a light Metroidvania at heart, allowing full exploration. Notably, the character and mechanical design were created by Masamune Shirow of GitS fame.

This cyberpunk/mecha RPG came out late in the SFC's lifespan, but boasted detailed graphics and a soundtrack by Toshiaki Sakoda, known for his legendary compositions for M.U.S.H.A. and other Aleste series games.

Your obscure retro game of the day was released today in 1987 - Otocky.🎶A collaboration between ASCII and artist Toshio Iwai, Otocky is a musical side-scrolling shump for the Famicom Disk System that is one of the first games to include creative-procedural music as part of the gameplay.
