Men Are Buying Hacking Tools to Use Against Their Wives and Friends In Telegram groups, men are sharing thousands of nonconsensual images of women and girls, buying spyware, and engaging in doxing and sexual abuse.

AP says it will offer buyouts as part of pivot away from newspaper-focused history The Associated Press says it will offer buyouts to an unspecified number of its U.S.-based journalists as part of an acceleration away from the focus on newspapers and their print journalism that sust...

People should actually be very alarmed that while AP's business model is shot to bits, Americans are still very much reliant on the news it delivers. The alternatives in some cases are inferior or non-existent.

I wore Meta’s smartglasses for a month – and it left me feeling like a creep Content creators love the built-in camera; sceptics call them ‘pervert glasses’. Do we really need any more hi-tech wearables, even with a voice assistant that sounds like Judi Dench?

Florida bans sociology from core curriculum at state universities For years, Republican lawmakers and education leaders have argued that sociology — especially high-enrollment introductory courses — has been overtaken by progressive ideology

while I do hold a sociology PhD, I don’t have a particular attachment to the discipline per se, esp as my own approach is an eclectic mix of things

but what the fuck in gods name is this fucking nonsense?!?!

Lyme disease vaccine shows 70 percent efficacy, Pfizer says If approved by regulators, it could become the only Lyme disease vaccine available for people — although it would not be the first.

Four doses of an experimental vaccine to protect against Lyme disease reduced the number of tick-borne infections by more than 70 percent, according to Pfizer and Valneva.

If successful, it could become the only Lyme disease vaccine available for people.

A petri dish of human brain cells is currently playing Doom. Should we be worried? Scientists in the US have uploaded a fruit fly to a computer simulation, while an Australian lab has taught neurons on a glass chip to play a 90s video game. How long before we are all living in a sci-fi movie?

The principal function of Fox News, Newsmax and similar fringe right outlets is to teach Americans to hate their fellow Americans if their political views, skin color, religion, sexual orientation or ethnicity are different. That's having a strong effect.

LLMs can unmask pseudonymous users at scale with surprising accuracy Pseudonymity has never been perfect for preserving privacy. Soon it may be pointless.

Pseudonymity has always been a bit shaky, but it might be nearing a breaking point.

New research shows LLMs can unmask "anonymous" users across platforms with up to 90% precision. By reasoning through free text instead of just structured data, AI may transform the age old practice.

The Kids Trump Sent to ICE’s Dilley Detention Center ProPublica went inside the immigrant detention center for families in Dilley, Texas. Children held there told us about the anguish of being ripped from their lives in the United States and the fear of...

We found the Trump administration kept about 300 kids at the Dilley detention center for more than a month, despite a long-standing legal settlement that generally limits the time children can be held in detention to 20 days.

I can't get over this number: in 2007, there were 360,000 newspaper jobs. Now, there are 80,000. "My local paper sucked!" Sure. What sucks even more? The void. "I get all my news from the Guardian!" No, the Guardian doesn't report on your town council, your school board, local cops.

‘A joyful day’: final piece of Sagrada Familia’s central tower put in place Completion of glass cross brings Antoni Gaudí’s church to maximum final height of 172.5m, 144 years after work began The final piece of the central tower of Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia has been laid in place, bringing the church to its maximum final height 144 years after work began. After several days when it has been too windy to work, the upper section of the 17 metre-high four-sided steel and glass cross was winched into position at 11am on Friday, completing the tower dedicated to Jesus Christ. At 172.5 metres, the Sagrada Familia, to which the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí devoted the later part of his life, is Barcelona’s tallest building and the world’s tallest church. Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right.

Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement.

This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.

Single dose of potent psychedelic drug could help treat depression, trial shows Researchers find DMT – used in shamanic rituals – in tandem with psychotherapy has significant effect People with major depressive disorder can see a rapid and lasting improvement after a single dose of the psychedelic drug dimethyltryptamine (DMT) when it is combined with psychotherapy, doctors have said. A small clinical trial involving 34 people found that psychedelic-assisted therapy prompted a swift reduction in depressive symptoms that endured long after the drug had worn off, with some still feeling the benefits six months later. It’s important to realize that the subtext of Trump freaking out at Kaitlan Collins when she asks him what he’d say to the Epstein survivors is that she may in practice be asking what he’d say to the *Trump* survivors, and they both know that. A well worded question
