This is a good point.

Around a third of Boomers were SAHMs. Maybe their spouse or partner worked, or they were on SS or ADC, or there was another circumstance. Previous generations of retirees and grandparents were also part of the village.

Plenty of adults were around, just in the background.

I meant for the conclusion to refer to Murphy & her apparent support of both slavery & self-determination for (white) women, but it also applies to those policing the boundaries of gender. Rights are unstable & ultimately impossible so long as they come at the expense of others. ❤️✊

Under such a system of gendered violence, anyone not seeming manly or womanly enough was left open to suspicion, discrimination, & violence. This made NO ONE safer.

Whatever we make of their identities & whether or not they had intended to live as men or simply to don a temporary disguise, the rigid & recriminatory gender regime under which they lived made them infinitely less safe.
