After big dams on the upper Klamath River in far northern CA were removed in 2024, Chinook (king) salmon migrated upstream for the first time in 100+ years--and now they have hatched.

That's Delphinium tricorne aka dwarf larkspur! It's a sensitive spring ephemeral wildflower that prefers moist bottomland woods and is difficult to establish outside of habitats in pristine conditions. They are usually purple, but out of thousands of purples I saw one pink!

Everyone can do a bit of this work by helping to control invasive species so that they don't spread into places like this and throw off this balanced system. Planting native plants where you can also helps support insect communities to have a wider range than just intact systems only.

My job is to reconstruct native ecosystems like this one, but seeing the real deal always puts our young restorations into perspective. You can't just recreate this biodiversity overnight. It takes centuries for the soil, trees, and plant communities to stabilize & mature. But we can start now.
