trying times, and to think of young readers who are being kept from experiencing the transformative magic of books.
All this to say, these are strange times indeed. And while I may not be doing a US tour for the launch of Dreamslinger this time around, I’m not going anywhere!
Dreamslinger is
about belonging, choice, friendships and found families, and about forging one’s path in a world of competing absolutes. My books seek to bring joy, not hate; and promote compassion, not division.
And it brings me great sadness to think of teachers and librarians who have to navigate these
with books that draw inspiration from Korean culture and mythology, my visit could be seen as a “diversity and inclusion” initiative, and therefore something that could invite scrutiny and challenge from their schools, boards, or authorities.
My books are about magic and fantastical creatures,
I have had multiple teachers reaching out to me, apologising for not being able to host me at their schools, despite their students’ excitement and enthusiasm for my books, due to the current political climate. As a writer of Korean heritage, with a Korean name, and
I would have spent most of my time visiting and talking at schools across the country - something I absolutely LOVE doing.
Unfortunately, school visits in the US have become increasingly difficult to secure - and particularly so for certain groups of writers. To give you one example:
Truthfully, there are a bunch of reasons, most of them I won’t go into… But what I will say is that as writers of middle grade books, school visits make up the lion’s share of how we reach our readers. In the original US tour plan,
