New paper: In the era of overshoot, are climate risk assessments fit for purpose? by me & Mandi Bissett. What is geoengineering for? Beyond emergency climate response, is it an approach that effectively stops deeper action on the climate crisis?

Actual climate scientist here. 2.5C is on the optimistic end of the literature on current policy outcomes, which spans the range from 2.3C to 3C. I wrote a review of the literature on the subject earlier this year: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
Today we're thrilled to share a new report with findings from across the Greenhouse Gas Removal Demonstrators programme. Over the last 4.5 years, the programme has made a step change in our understanding of the potential of 5 land-based GGR technologies to deliver genuine greenhouse gas removals.
Seeing calls "to keep 1.5°C within reach" at #COP30 and am unsure what to make of them. What would a failure to recognise reality mean? Does it mean we are also not recognising the need to adapt to a 1.5°C world?

I have a new @nytimes.com guest essay w/ @davidkeith.bsky.social about sunlight reflection. We note its not a solution for climate change and at best a band aid to treat systems, and suggest if its ever done it should only be to replace the cooling from air pollution today:
