Timeline graphic titled "Key Events in Irish Nuclear Abolition Effort." Five entries: 1958, The Irish Resolution, first UN Resolution designed to prevent further dissemination of nuclear weapons. 1961, Res. 1665 Unanimously Passes, Ireland's annual nonproliferation push culminates in unanimous UN Resolution 1665 based on the Irish Resolution. 1968, First to Sign NPT, Ireland becomes the first country to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty, built on the foundation of Resolution 1665. 2017, Day One for Abolition, Ireland signs the TPNW on opening day, affirming that nonproliferation alone is not enough. 2024, UN to Study Nuclear War Effects, Ireland and New Zealand lead the first UN mandated study on the effects of nuclear war in nearly 40 years. Oregon PSR logo in bottom right corner.
The work toward a nuclear free world continues. In '24, Ireland & New Zealand led the push for the first UN study on nuclear war effects in decades, now underway. As Irish Resolutions architect Aiken put it: "preserve a Pax Atomica while we build a Pax Mundi." OPSR is proud to push for that world. ☘️
Black and white historical photograph of Irish Minister for External Affairs Frank Aiken seated at a table signing a document, surrounded by a room full of suited officials and diplomats. Text overlay reads "Ireland's History of Nuclear Abolition." A caption below the photo reads "July 1, 1968 — Irish Minister for External Affairs Frank Aiken was the first person to sign the Nonproliferation Treaty due to his role in promoting the cause." Oregon PSR logo in the bottom right corner.
This St. Patrick's Day, a look at Ireland's long, sustained commitment to fighting for a nuclear free world. From the Irish Resolutions in 1958, to being first to sign the NPT in 1968, to signing the TPNW on day one in 2017 and more. ☘️
"Right now, climate work is hard – and scary. What helps is joy-forward, relational organizing. Fighting well-funded systems of harm is rarely fun, but it’s more bearable when you’re not doing it alone."

On Jesse Jackson - Jesse Jackson: The Nuclear Disarmament Candidate - "As a grassroots activist, Jackson consistently expressed the belief that peace and equality were connected. Jackson made nuclear disarmament a central component of his campaign not in spite of, but because of race and one would be hard pressed to find a presidential candidate before or after Jackson that has demonstrated such a strong antinuclear platform. " - The Nuclear Times - Vincent Intondi, PhD, Executive Director, Oregon PSR - link in bio
In The Nuclear Times, OPSR Executive Director Vincent Intondi reflects on Jesse Jackson’s legacy and why he made nuclear disarmament central to his 1984 campaign. Jackson saw peace and equality as inseparable and linked disarmament to justice and human survival.

Oregon PSR - We're Hiring - Membership and Communications Coordinator Position - Part-Time / Hybrid - For more info: oregonpsr.org/jobs - Be Part of the Solution
📣 We’re hiring a Membership & Communications Coordinator to join Oregon PSR (Portland, hybrid). This 20 hr/week role supports member engagement, donor stewardship, and communications—helping reduce climate and nuclear risks.
As OPSR Board Member Patricia Kullberg, MD, MPH, warns, this decision would “sacrifice our kids, seniors, and communities to polluters.”
Physicians for Social Responsibility is challenging the repeal in court. See more here: buff.ly/1cOHGXy
On the repeal of the endangerment finding - "Greenhouse gases are already making us sick—and repealing the Endangerment Finding will only make things worse. The EPA’s power to regulate health-harming pollutants comes from this critical safeguard. Throwing it out would put public health at serious risk and sacrifice our kids, seniors, and communities to polluters." Patricia Kullberg, MD, MPH - Oregon PSR
This week, EPA finalized its repeal of the Endangerment Finding, the legal basis for regulating greenhouse gas pollution under the Clean Air Act.
Without it, federal authority to limit climate pollution is significantly weakened, putting public health at greater risk.
