After the war in 1945 yes the US was exceptional (it still is...just). Going back in time before 1945 the UK was exceptional as was Russia. However "exceptionalism" is really based on believing your country is exceptional when it no longer is from my perspective.

Yeah Schengen means the UK should not consider rejoining until it finds a joint way to protect the GFA with Ireland. Reminds me of those who shout Canada should join the EU without thinking of the effect on the Canadian First Nation tribes.

The thing is Britain was not the only European country to have an Empire. Why does this notion of Global Britain still pervade? Second World war not being fought on UK soil? It wax not fought on Swedish or Irish soil either. UK never having its Empire on Continental Europe?
I see a similar issue with Schengen. The UK should only get an opt-out with Schengen if Ireland agrees to that too and both countries can maintain the opt-out.
As an American we're in a worse position for burning bridges. That's why the UK's priority should not be rejoining but making sure that Reform never, ever, ever get near power.
The rejoin story needs to be A49 and following the rules that other countries who wish to join have to follow too.
