this is absolutely the case. it’s all i hear—& don’t hear—when i hand out free masks at these tables, from my bag at events, or frankly just wearing a mask in public; the trauma simmers in pointed stares & silences until someone, something (my mask) gives permission for it to come out.
Folks do not want to acknowledge this, even though an unmasked face in a public space—behavior identical to those they’d swear up & down are ideological opposites—says it all.
