Intriguing! These are the kinds of ideas we need to grow the Open Social Web!

My rule of thumb is that for each minute of presentation, it takes one hour to prepare. Assuming you start from scratch and the work is merely creating the presentation, not solving still unsolved issues.
... The real opposition are the oligarch-controlled, enshittified, manipulating major commercial platforms. We have no chance of making a dent into their dominance if the revolution fights itself instead.
I want to applaud @rose.bsky.team and @mellifluousbox.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy for appearing on stage together and expressing a desire to cooperate. As I've said for a long time, #Bluesky and #Mastodon, #ActivityPub and #ATProtocol should not be fighting each other...
“Not yet”. Aha!
Panel with Bluesky and Mastodon at the International Journalism Festival
Felix, CEO of Mastodon, and I hope to collaborate more. Mastodon has wide adoption in Europe and 8k communities (servers) running independently. The customization they give communities is inspiring to me. Public squares should be a gathering place for you to discover cozier corners/communities.
Screenshot of Eurosky fundraising page showing amount raised: €5,226 out of a €100,000 target and number of supporters (282).
We’re fundraising to build everything we need to operate without Bluesky. Our €100,000 target will accelerate our goal of building a European app backend (Appview) and a microblogging app.
Since last night over 282 of you contributed more than €5,000.
Let's do this!

... is the conclusion: "Blacksky is a great VC investment opportunity, the VC world just hasn't realized that yet" (or @rude1.blacksky.team hasn't pitched them/enough -- don't know whether he has tried) or "Bluesky isn't a VC investment opportunity either"?
... gives Bluesky an "unfair monetization advantage" if indeed the protocol and the code are open source and will remain so?
And then,...
... Like user numbers. First mover advantage. Racism which could be a factor as well. And a few others. But none of them are large enough IMHO that makes one project VC investable and not the other, the only thing it should impact is valuation. Just what exactly ...
I've been pondering this post by @spookalucca.tv since I saw it yesterday. It's a really good question.
"VC is investing $100mil in Bluesky and not Blacksky, why?" (bsky.app/profile/spoo...)
Of course there are particularities around the projects that are different...
My evidence: I've heard no substantive complaints so far. And my hope in posting about it is that if you disagree, this is the opportunity for you to speak up!

But what are the categories in the Open Social Web? I looked and asked around, and could not find any substantive categorization. So we created one. Here it is: connect.fediforum.or...
Is it the final word on structuring the space? Most certainly not. But I think it's a good start.

When creating FediForum Connect, it quickly became clear that there are many different types of Open Social Web products and services and we can't just list them in one long list.
Like, say, in the PC market, we have component vendors of CPUs, RAM, motherboards, assemblers like Dell, etc.

For a long time, I've been looking for a graphic that visually communicates what open protocol-based social media is all about. Finally, it struck me: it's not a graphic, but an animation that we need. And I created one.
Check it out at the top of connect.fediforum.org and tell me what you think.
Your's truly got quoted a bunch in this nicely illustrated piece for SXSW London titled "The internet is broken. Where do we go now?"

When you are both the sole designer and the sole user, and your part fails user testing …
Fortunately fixes and reprints are easy. #iphonestand #ipadstand #3dprinting
Not surprising.
Excellent analysis. It's frustrating how much we don't know yet. But it's also very exciting now much we don't know yet, we can create the future we want, the canvas is more open than it has been for a long time!
Also this is talk by a VC who does not recommend VC :-)
🔥 KHANNA: “Do you think FDR would’ve threatened to wipe out a civilization? Lincoln? Donald Trump has compromised every moral standing we have as a nation.”
@khanna.house.gov goes on offense on Fox

We are extremely happy that Alexandra Geese, member of the European parliament and outspoken advocate for better social media, digital sovereignty, participatory democracy and more will be giving the keynote at the next FediForum April 28-30, 2026.

Bay area people: I have an old but functional mini tower PC. Intel i3 of some kind. 16GB RAM DDR3 RAM. Anybody who might want such a thing?
Drama in the Bluesky / ATmosphere world. I was in the room when the announcement happened, and this piece describes the situation very well. I’m looking forward to seeing whether Bsky can learn that building a shared commons is very different from any other kind of startup.
Ouch.
Congratulations Mike and team!
Very nicely laid out. 👏👏👏
... if it really turns out that a partner project isn't delivering what it needs to for the health of the ecosystem, invest in them, or buy them! Not compete with them.
More transparent would be good, but more importantly: at least in the early stages of the ecosystem, do the utmost not to piss off anybody who has enthusiastically bought into your vision. I'd declare the domain of any meaningful ecosystem project off-limits to the company, and ...
