A (quite personal) essay from me about reclaiming rewilding in Wales, out in @inkcapjournal.bsky.social today.
I was born, raised and still live in rural Wales. My ancestral farmhouse is a ruin surrounded by conifer trees. I understand the fears.
But it's the loss of nature I fear far more.
Glad to see the EA declaring this sewage pollution of the Pinsley Brook from Welsh Water illegal.
Thanks to the woman who spotted and first reported this constant discharge and to Hereford Times for first reporting on it.
We attended and confirmed grim state.

Update on Welsh Water’s Kingsland - Pinsley Brook sewage spill. Environment Agency: “This is not a permitted storm overflow and as such these discharges are illegal”
www.herefordtimes.com/news/2600069...
Kicking the can down the road, 3 YEARS of delay that Wye catchment can’t afford. The problems have been identified for years and we know the solutions: Stop poisoning our rivers with animal manure and sewage. Bring in a WPZ now to give strong regulation & real protection
www.uwe.ac.uk/news/river-wye
Just what we don't need. Already, our rivers are overloaded with both human and livestock waste, leading in many cases to #rivercide. Now the government, responding as always to lobbyists, wants to make it worse. Then it wonders why it loses public support. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Welsh Water DwrCymru Kingsland sewage plant month long discharge (Pinsley brook - Lugg - Wye).
Over the years she has already noticed a decline in wildlife on the brook, coupled with an increase in "green slime"
And it’s still spilling…

the UK is set to change planning rules to make it easier to develop intensive livestock farms across the country following a lobbying campaign by Big Chicken
my new investigation for the @theguardian.com
www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Drawing on dozens of scientific papers, the authors warned that environmental policies were insufficient to reverse the decline of the soils, pollinators, water courses and habitats on which farmers depended and said that “transformational change” was required to restore them.
Ministers ignored a report warning that Britain’s food supply is on course to collapse.
The report said climate change, habitat loss and geopolitical instability were undermining food security so much that it could be at risk of "catastrophic failure” by 2030.
www.thetimes.com/uk/environme...
Hard to know which is more shocking - the dire warnings of the potential collapse of our food system in the UK or the fact that governments have tried to cover it up. Their complacency is off the scale. We urgently need to switch to growing more food domestically & to restore nature now
BREAKING:
Huge news:
The contents of a secret U.K. Govt report on Britain’s ‘critical systems’ and their grave vulnerability have just now been made public by the TIMES, for the very first time.
Short impt THREAD…
Rivers are the lifeblood of our landscapes - but in many constituencies like mine, they're under threat.
It was an honour to present my petition on behalf of constituents, calling on the govt to take further action to address pollution and save the River Wye and its tributaries.
The film is co-directed by Vey Straker and Charlotte Sawyer, & produced by Vey Straker and Kim Kaos. Commissioned as part of the Cambridge Rivers of Film Festival 2025, organised by Cambridge Past, Present & Future, with funding from the National Lottery Community Fund and sponsored by Save the Wye.
The film follows the Wye Ceremonial Team as they respond to the River Wye’s ecological crisis through protest, artistry and ritual. A powerful story of love, resistance, and reconnecting with the living world.
Q&A exploring:
- What ceremony can offer environmental movements
- How communities can create meaningful moments of solidarity and remembrance
- The role of ritual activism in sustaining long-term campaigns
- How creative approaches can broaden participation and hope
TONIGHT - free online @riveractionuk.bsky.social River Rescue Kit session: Remember to Remember, a film about Wye Ceremonial Team’s work responding to ecological crisis through creativity, love, and collective action. Plus Q&A.

Britain's waterways are vital resources for our communities, local economies, and wildlife - they must be protected, for people and planet.
That means taking a truly joined up approach to pollution, tackling sewage and agricultural pollution alike. #WorldWaterDay
