Today in Teaching in Higher Ed
Posts by Jean M. Lamont, PhD
I am over the moon at the opportunity to teach and conduct research in the department that sparked my passion for psychological science and to contribute to the campus climate that convinced me I belonged in higher ed.
I’ve been holding onto this news because I’m still pinching myself to make sure it’s not actually a dream. I am ecstatic to announce that coming Fall, I will join the faculty in the Psychology Department at my alma mater, Denison University.
This week it comes to a vote and Trump is demanding passage.
Call your Senators AGAIN.

“We want to see a pro-science Congress,” said Delawalla in an interview backstage. “That’s how we’re going to stop the destruction. And if people in Congress right now won’t stand up for science, we’ll elect people who will stand up for science.”

Professors will recognize this kid as the student who didn't do the reading but still has very strong opinions about how it's all "bullshit," except this time he's not the callow student who's going to fail your course, he's the reviewer who's going to cancel your grant.
I'm just a PI, standing in front of his lab, asking them once again to please label things more specifically than "Abstract.docx" or "Grant.docx"
For the first three years of my PhD, the project on which my current research program is based was just called "Correlational Study"🫠
Got to be on an Eating Disorders Info Panel with Gabby Davis, LPA, MA, MEd, a former @bellarmineu.bsky.social student who continues to do excellent work in eating disorders treatment in her PsyD program!
The Epstein files document what many women researchers have long experienced but rarely seen laid bare so starkly: exclusion operating behind closed doors, shaping who gets funded, invited, mentored, and taken seriously. How many of these networks, norms, and gatekeepers remain in place?
I don’t know who needs to hear Jesse Jackson leading the kids on Sesame Street in this beautiful call-and-response reminding them that every child is somebody, but here it is
i’m giving up peer reviewing for lent
Beautiful photo. (Also, #HawkPants)
ACADEMIC YEAR STRESS UPDATE: Emails approaching unhinged levels of gratitude and sideways smiley faces

Rules for thee, not for me. It's amazing what people can justify when they think they're superior to others.
EHB Lab research assistants at @bellarmineu.bsky.social setting up for the first run of their psychophys experiment. So exciting!!! 🩺📈🎉
Just received word that all three of my lab students who applied for research grants from @bellarmineu.bsky.social SGA were funded in full. These scholars worked hard to create thoughtful projects in a time crunch, and I am so very, very proud of them! 🎉 🎉 🎉
Always a great day when we can share new research findings! Is "nomophobia" associated with college students' physical health once general anxiety is accounted for? And what is the role of social comparison orientation? #DigitalHealth🤓

October is #Menopause Awareness Month! Did you know there are many ways to access menopause information & support through apps? Many of these feature videos & messaging between users. (Always check with the information with reliable sources & consult your medical provider.) #WomensHealth #mHealth
Send your two US Senators and your US Representative a note asking them to implement common sense gun control (e.g., an assault weapons ban) www.congress.gov/members/find...
Thank you!!!
This project was Abby's original idea which she explored in an undergraduate research practicum in my Emotions, Health, & the Body Lab at @bellarmineu.bsky.social She is now pursuing her PsyD at Spalding U. Go, Abby!
Of course, more research is needed, esp. to test the progression of the variables in our model. NTL, body image rumination emerges as a novel predictor of poor health. And, this is yet more evidence that it's those negative weight attitudes--not necessarily weight itself--that can be bad for health
Moreover, this relationship may occur because body image rumination disrupts sleep.
Importantly, these results emerged regardless of BMI, no matter where participants fell on the weight spectrum.
In a sample of undergraduate and online community adults, we found that body image rumination--or rehashing negative thoughts *about your body,* over and over again--was associated with poor self-reported health.
Ever lie awake thinking dark thoughts about your body, vowing to "fix" it, etc? While diet culture will tell you that beating yourself up about your appearance in this way is good for your health, it may be just the opposite.
Big, huge CONGRATULATIONS to my former student, Abby Hardy, on her first first-author publication! www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

A new study finds one of the most cited #AI models used to scan chest x-rays doesn’t accurately detect potentially life-threatening diseases in marginalized groups, including women and Black people. scim.ag/42uhnPO
I'm new here! And I'm going to kick it off with recruitment for a research study:
If you are a clinician with experience treating eating disorders, please participate in this research study!
Why call? Why sign letters? Why protest? What does it do??
It. Adds. Up. And PRESSURE WORKS!
Keep it up, Dorks!
