Challenges in assessing Fire Weather changes in a warming climate - npj Climate and Atmospheric Science npj Climate and Atmospheric Science - Challenges in assessing Fire Weather changes in a warming climate

🎉 New in npj Climate and Atmospheric Science: “Challenges in assessing Fire Weather changes in a warming climate.”

We quantify a ~65% rise in extreme fire‑weather days (1980–2023) and show common daily‑proxy methods can overestimate trends by up to 10%.

In the coming decades, simultaneous fire weather in eastern Australia and western North America will likely become a recurring feature. Such overlaps are expected to constrain current resource-sharing agreements and the capacity of these nations to respond to large-scale wildfires.

11 months ago 0 0 1 0

Years of high fire weather season overlap co-occur with El Niño-like sea surface temperatures, especially with a Central Pacific El Niño signature.

11 months ago 0 0 1 0

We found that the fire weather seasons in the two regions are increasingly overlapping by one day per year since 1979. The increase in overlap is driven primarily by the earlier start of the eastern Australia fire season, which now overlaps more with the late season fires in western North America.

We analyzed the risk of simultaneous fire weather between eastern Australia and western North America, two regions linked by firefighting cooperation agreements that involve sharing resources such as aircraft and personnel.

On International Firefighters’ Day, happy to share our latest research about challenges in international firefighting cooperation due to increasing fire weather season overlap between Australia and North America.

Fire danger likely overestimated in future climate projections The Canadian Fire Weather Index (FWI) is widely used to assess wildfire danger and relies on meteorological data at local noon. However, climate models often provide only daily aggregated data, which ...

Excited to share our new preprint on challenges in estimating the Fire Weather Index with climate models!

Daily approximations can overestimate extreme fire danger by up to 10%.

Great study led by Jonas Schmitt: doi.org/10.1111/agec.12851

We analyzed concurrent on-farm yield losses of different crops to explore how crop diversification mitigates drought risks: growing crops with varying temporally water needs and phenological phases is more effective 🌧️🌾
