I thought "Blood on the Stars" was enjoyable pulp noir.

A good rule of thumb (especially for Mike Shayne books): Contents of the book are seldom reflected in the cover artwork.

Have you ever tried any of Brett Halliday's "Mike Shayne" novels?
The early ones are fun. Not as poignant as Chandler, but fun.
And, like Marlowe, Shayne rarely carries a gun.
