IIRC, it wasn't part of the scenario, just something the Keeper threw in there for additional risk/threat. Totally agree that if he blew the roll, the overall damage could have been mitigated to keep him at the table.
Oh, but in this specific instance, I do think that for the sake of the game, the Keeper should have hand-waved that particular roll. Let him die or go insane later on, but to cripple someone 5 minutes in and have them sit out the rest of the game seems inflexible/draconian.
Yeah, I'm not a screen guy either. I like the transparency and the horror of letting them see my dice rolls.
