But! I do see kids regularly digging into graphic novels and following along in novels while listening to an audiobook. Different types of stimulation, but also still digesting books. So not all hope is lost!

With 2 young kids, I see this daily. I watched plenty of TV when I was a kid, but had minimal choices. Whatever was on was it. Once Little House on the Prairie came on, it was time to go outside and play. Different ball game now that absolutely competes with other interests.

“Writing is thinking” is true; I learn so much when I admit I need to rip up most of a draft.

But in spite of building revision stages into assignments, I think I’ve rarely led students to grasp this for themselves in a writing course. It takes a long project they care about, like a thesis. 1/2

I was asking rhetorically (and sarcastically). I appreciate your posts and the evidence for my future arguments!

This line seems to indicate there's value to a human to AI process: "Brain-to-LLM users exhibited higher memory recall and activation of occipito-parietal and prefrontal areas"

Wait a second, this study is saying if kids use AI to write their essays they don't learn from that work??? That's the least surprising finding ever. Just more data that intentional AI use shouldn't just replace human thinking, it should support it.

You could do a find/replace of "Google" and "Cellphone" for "AI" and this 2006 article would still be relevant in 2025.

"No, the problem is not cheating. The problem is firmly one of instructional and evaluation technique."
