Why are most university degrees still three years long? If we want to fix student finances, the academic calendar needs a rethink | LBC As MPs launch an inquiry into student loans in England, it’s clear that the debate around how undergraduate degrees are funded shows no sign of slowing down.

This is the most harrowing take on education I've yet heard. Absolutely no understanding of the formation side of education. Just a pure rational economic efficiency lens. Barbaric. www.lbc.co.uk/article/univ...

England set to charge foreign tourists for entry to leading museums Move would affect British Museum and National Gallery, but could depend on success of government ID card roll-out

File under "bad ideas". One of the best things about England's cultural scene is that anyone can walk in off the street and view art for free.

Nice to have an approximation, but I'm looking forward to seeing how many illustrations make it into the final publication.

Just read a wonderful editorial preface to an 18th-19th C printing of John Wesley's prayer book. They note numbering variations in the various printings of the text and can't find a resolution so end with some crowd sourcing: "Has any reader seen an early edition?"

Sorry -- the system says it should be available, but their website is just returning an authentication error when I try to access it

Actually, strike that. Although it says we have access, all the articles are behind a paywall . . .

I have limited access. What are you after?

I'm trying to show that "paradox", as used by many commentators on Wesley's hymns, suggests a fundamental incoherence in the christological language of his hymns. Against this, I argue that the pairing of apparent opposites qua nature is indeed what the hypostatic union allows 2/2

Sage Journals: Discover world-class research Subscription and open access journals from Sage, the world's leading independent academic publisher.

My article on Charles Wesley's christology is now available via early access. It's always odd to see an article appear which you wrote a few years ago; the critiques come across as a bit grumpy, but I think that argument still works overall.

I graduated in Sydney on a 40°c day. Definitely did not wear a suit that day.

That said, open robes + suit work great here in Manchester.

The Running Novelist If I wanted to have a long life as a writer, I needed to find a way to stay in shape.

I really like Murakami's book about running. This little piece ends quite nicely: 33 was the age he started running, the age he started trying to make a living as a novelist. 33, "The age that Jesus Christ died" www.newyorker.com/magazine/200...

This reminds me of the time that I watched the first few movies back-to-back while editing a manuscript, realising with absolute horror that from Ripley's perspective those films all happen in the space of about one day.

I'll be having my eyes tested again soon, and think this is the likely outcome.
