Had a conversation today about the difference between "kindness" & "niceness" in leadership so decided to post about it. The article & graphic explain why, as leaders, we should choose kindness over niceness:

My favourite day of the year - Evil Villain Day. When my walk to work is timed perfectly and the street lamps turn off as I walk past. Feeling powerful ๐Ÿ’ช Love it! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Almost 300 deaths a week in 2023 associated with long A&E waits despite UEC Recovery Plan New analysis by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine reveals that there were almost 300 deaths a week associated with long A&E waits in 2023

12 hour waits for a bed in the ED used to be a red line, never to be crossed.

Now it is a just a part of life in ED.

For every 72 patients waiting 8-12 hours in ED there will be one excess death.

This is still unnacceptable.

Genuine worry that if flow is ever fixed I won't remember how to practise what Emergency Medicine is meant to be, as I've spent quite a long time trying to get good at practising what it currently is.

Annual visit from the Local Authority today to make sure that we are providing suitable #HomeEducation for the teen. Again apologetic that no support / help available for him and that we have to do it all ourselves. #notfineinschool #ASD

We were lucky enough to have the shop floor covered by the consultants from our sister site for the day. Hugely appreciative. โ˜บ๏ธ

Work from home this morning with the sound of Home Education in the background - bagpipes and a history lesson in case you were wondering. Off to work now to give my ears a break ๐Ÿ™‰ #ASD #HomeEd #notfineinschool

Think of something you admire about each of your colleagues. Write it down. Give it to them.

Received a folder of positivity at the end of the Away Day yesterday. Feel very appreciated โ˜บ๏ธ

It is good to provide alternatives for patients in the community. But A&E remains a very strong, trusted brand with patients.

The effort to divert low acuity patients away, is effort probably best applied elsewhere.

The bottom line is that if you wish to improve A&E performance, the effort spent diverting low acuity patients away from A&E will probably not contribute very much.

Answer:
There is no correlation between A&Es with a high % of low acuity patients - those patients with less urgent needs that can be seen elsewhere - and A&Es with worse waiting time performance, or vice versa.

Revealed: 50 A&Es where most patients โ€˜could be seen elsewhereโ€™ The emergency departments where more than half of patients "could have been seen elsewhere" are revealed by new figures uncovered by HSJ.

Mythbuster: does diverting low acuity patients from A&E improve A&E performance?
