In fairness, I don’t think he’s saying propaganda can’t be art or that art can’t be used as propaganda, but that that if something “only” aims to advance a political agenda then it’s “just” propaganda and not both art and propaganda. I saw this exhibition and here is a picture of the wall label in the room that says “Gonzalez-Torres cared for his partner Ross Laycock, named in the candy work's title, who died from HIV/AIDS in 1991.” I’m puzzled by what the writer thinks is being erased.
